Salary - £100,000 - £110,000

With a new and future-facing remit, this role will lead the capability agenda across Finance Services in the Metropolitan Police Service, drive continuous improvement, and embed best practice across financial governance, service design and workforce development. The role sits within the new looking to the future pillar, which is responsible for financial strategy, planning and capability.


The role will attract a basic salary in the range of £100,000 - £110,000; a non pensionable allowance might be payable in addition to basic salary, for a candidate with exceptional and relevant, knowledge, skills and experience.


The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) stands as the UK's largest police force, dedicated to safeguarding London - a vibrant, diverse, and globally influential city. We are transforming our service through ‘A New Met for London’, a strategic plan built on the priorities of more trust, less crime, and high standards. This plan is informed by over 10,000 interactions with Londoners, aiming to align the MPS's objectives with the needs and expectations of the community. As part of this transformation, we are seeking an outstanding strategic leader to join our Finance Senior Management Team as Director of Finance Capability – a role that is central to modernising our financial operations, building organisational capability, and delivering impactful change for London. With oversight of a team of around 115 finance professionals and an operating budget of £4bn+ and a capital plan of £1.4bn over five years, this is a senior leadership position with real influence.


About the Role:


As a key member of the Finance Senior Management Team, you will:

  • Set and lead the strategic direction for Finance Services, ensuring high-quality, customer-focused support that aligns with organisational priorities.
  • Continuously evolve the finance operating model, adapting services to meet changing corporate and operational needs.
  • Champion culture and inclusion, embedding the Met’s Culture Plan and London Race Action Plan, and leading on local engagement across the finance workforce.
  • Strengthen capability across the function and wider MPS, through targeted training and support for professional development.
  • Lead innovation and transformation, delivering new finance tools, systems and processes that reflect sector best practice.
  • Lead on cross-cutting strategic finance issues, helping the Met to drive further efficiency and to secure the success of major programmes.
  • Represent the MPS nationally, shaping the development of public finance through collaboration and leadership at sector forums.

Essential Knowledge & Experience:


We are seeking a senior finance professional with a strong track record of leadership, innovation and transformation. You will bring:

  • Full CCAB, CIMA, or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Demonstrable strategic leadership experience in a large, complex organisation, ideally within the public sector.
  • Strong knowledge of financial governance, compliance frameworks, and large-scale organisational change.
  • Experience leading major transformation or capability development programmes in finance.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, working with senior leaders and external partners.
  • In-depth understanding of the strategic role of finance in enabling public service
  • delivery.
