Director of Fundraising

The Childhood Trust is London's child poverty charity. We are dedicated to creating opportunities and brighter futures for the 700,000 children growing up in poverty in London. While we work to alleviate today’s impact of poverty, we support children and families to build pathways to become happier, healthier, safer and more resilient, breaking the cycles of inequity. Listening to and engaging with young people who have experience of living in poverty, is critical to ensuring our efforts truly reflect their needs and aspirations. 

As Director of Fundraising, you will be a key member of our senior leadership team delivering on the strategic objectives of the charity with responsibility for raising £4m this financial year in voluntary income for the Childhood Trust across trusts & foundations, corporates, major donors and community. 

Delivering growth year-on-year to support the ambitious plans of the organisation. Directly managing three ‘Heads Of’ fundraising roles, you will create a new fundraising strategy, steer the fundraising team’s activities, secure funding, and cultivate relationships that fuel our mission. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities: 

Strategy  

Design and deliver on an effective fundraising strategy and engagement plan to meet fundraising targets agreed with the CE, attracting new donors and stewarding and securing repeat donations from existing funders.  

• Create an implementation plan to ensure every opportunity is explored to reach our £4m income target.  
• Work with SLT to create a new ‘storytelling’ strategy for the charity.  
• Keep abreast of policy, practice and statistics relating to child poverty in order to convey the challenges for children growing up in poverty in London and our solutions. 
• Identify and build strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholder, prospects and funders.  
• Write compelling cases for support with detailed business cases and proposals.  

Team leadership 

Nurture, motivate and develop an ambitious and growing team culture to achieve stretching targets  

• Manage and motivate the Head of Corporate Partnerships, Head of Philanthropy (Trusts and Foundations) and Head of Major Donors to ensure they have the tools, information and opportunities to reach their income targets.  
• Work with the Head of Comms & Marketing to ensure The Childhood Trust’s outcomes and impact data are conveyed accurately and in a compelling and positive way to donors.  
• Ensure the wider organisation and the Board are bought into the fundraising strategy and approach by working collaboratively with them to find solutions to any barriers to achieving our goals.   

Stewardship 

Enhance and champion a proactive, sector leading cultivation and stewardship programme  

• Implement a strong stewardship strategy for existing funders to encourage multi-year funding and to increase income. 
• Work with the Director of Programmes & Impact on the implementation of our new volunteer strategy for our financial supporters.  
• Work with the CE and other stakeholders such as our Trustees to identify and develop engagement approaches to high net worth individuals.  

Reporting and processes  

Further develop and execute robust fundraising processes and procedures based on data excellence  

• Keep an accurate record of contacts, pitches, pledges and partnerships to enable accurate and timely reporting on income and year end forecasting to board and CEO as requested.  
• Work with the Finance Manager to ensure accurate record keeping and ensure timely collection of income across all fundraising streams from personal activity, CEO activity and online fundraising, checking against accounts to identify any errors in funding attribution and thank all donors appropriately.  
• Work with CEO to identify any potential shortfalls in income and how these will be mitigated to achieve year end income target.  

Candidates must be able to demonstrate: 

• Demonstrable experience of successfully managing five/six-figure, multi-faceted partnerships  
• Evidence of successful income performance against targets and ability to understand and report against budgets 
• Ability to manage complex relationships and senior stakeholders, both internally and externally 
• Experience of line management and supporting the professional development of colleagues  
• Experience of developing new revenue streams and creating compelling partnership proposals to achieve growth targets against KPIs 
• Experience of using a CRM to monitor and manage contacts.
