Location:

Oxford, GBR

Our mission is to unlock human potential. We welcome you for who you are, the background you bring, and we embrace individuals who get excited about learning. Bring your experiences, your perspectives, and your passion; it’s in our differences that we empower the way the world learns.

About The Role

In this role, you’ll lead a global team responsible for delivering innovative journal and article growth strategies for Wiley’s Life Sciences journals. You’ll lead teams working across society and proprietary journals as well as a team of in house editors. You’ll take the helm of strategically important subject areas, including Cell & Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, and Food Science, ensuring we continue to grow, evolve, and deliver on our publishing goals.

You’ll translate high-level strategy into actionable plans with measurable outcomes. These will balance the immediate needs of the business with long-term ambitions. You’ll ensure that the team’s priorities are clear and will manage resourcing to deliver on Research Publishing targets. By combining a deep understanding of the publishing landscape and strong analytic skills with stakeholder insights, you’ll guide your team to develop, implement, and measure impactful journal and subject strategies that include expectations on strategic and geographic diversity in editorial appointments, author retention and editor succession-planning. With a large proportion of your portfolio being society owned, you and your team will also be involved in society contract bids, renewals and pitches.

How You Will Make An Impact

  • Grow submissions and output in key subject areas by identifying opportunities, closing performance gaps, and developing short- and long-term plans for priority journals.
  • Deliver on publishing and revenue goals by ensuring output, acceptance rates, and author retention meet or exceed targets, while contributing to the success of transformative agreements.
  • Drive Open Access publishing at scale by embedding a performance-based editorial culture, setting clear expectations for article targets, board appointments, author engagement, and editor succession planning.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Partner Publishing, Marketing, and other Research Publishing teams to implement initiatives that drive efficiency, productivity, and consistent author experience.
  • Build and nurture relationships with authors, editors, and partners through regular communication, meetings, and conference participation, strengthening Wiley’s reputation as a trusted partner and thought leader in scholarly publishing.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing global team by fostering a culture of accountability, empowerment, and professional growth, ensuring team members are equipped to meet current and future organisational needs.

We’re Looking For Someone Who Has

  • Significant experience in journal publishing with a proven track record of developing and growing journals.
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills, with the ability to build collaborative relationships both internally and externally.
  • Exceptional communication and problem-solving abilities, with a creative approach to developing and proposing solutions.
  • Experience leading teams through change, creating a positive and motivating environment.
  • Ability to balance short-term delivery with long-term strategic planning, even in resource-constrained environments.
