Position Purpose
The Head of Maritime Training will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of our digital maritime training portfolio. This includes designing course content, ensuring compliance with relevant international and national maritime regulations, securing accreditation from relevant authorities, and overseeing the effective delivery of training via the LMS. The role requires strong industry knowledge, regulatory understanding, and the ability to blend technical maritime expertise with modern e-learning practices.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic & Leadership
· Lead the overall strategy for maritime training programs, ensuring alignment with Solent Marine Consultants’ business goals.
· Oversee the development and launch of the LMS as a market-leading maritime training platform.
· Build and manage a high-performing training development and assessment team.
Course Development & Quality Assurance
· Design and develop digital training courses covering maritime safety, compliance, and operations.
· Ensure courses meet International Maritime Organization (IMO), STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), and other applicable regulatory requirements
· Create value-added training programs that enhance operational efficiency for clients
· Establish and maintain quality assurance procedures for training delivery and assessment
Accreditation & Compliance
· Secure necessary approvals and accreditations from relevant maritime authorities, classification societies, and training regulators
· Maintain ongoing compliance with international and national training standards
· Liaise with flag states, port state control authorities, and other regulatory bodies to ensure training validity and recognition
Operational Management
· Oversee the integration of assessments, tracking, and certification processes within the LMS
· Monitor course performance, learner feedback, and completion rates to drive continuous improvement
· Manage training budgets, resource allocation, and reporting
Stakeholder Engagement
· Collaborate with shipping companies, manning agencies, and maritime professionals to ensure training programs meet market needs
· Represent Solent Marine Consultants at maritime industry events, conferences, and regulatory forums
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
· Master Mariner (Class 1) or Chief Engineer (Class 1) qualification, or equivalent senior maritime certification
· Minimum 10 years’ experience in maritime operations, safety management, or compliance
· Proven track record in developing and delivering maritime training programs.
· Strong understanding of IMO conventions, STCW requirements, ISM Code, and other maritime regulations
· Experience with e-learning systems, digital course delivery, and online assessment.
· Demonstrated ability to secure training accreditation and regulatory approvals
Desirable
· Postgraduate qualification in Maritime Education, Training, or a related discipline
· Experience in LMS implementation and instructional design
· Background in both seagoing and shore-based maritime training roles

· Strong leadership and team management abilities
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Analytical mindset with attention to detail in compliance matters
· Ability to work with cross-functional teams, including IT, content developers, and regulatory experts
· Commercial acumen with understanding of the maritime training market
· Commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in training delivery
