Job Summary:
Watson Marlow, a global leader in fluid management technologies, is seeking an experienced and innovative Electronics Design Manager to join our dynamic New Product Innovation (NPI) Engineering team. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of our industry-leading products by leading the design, development, and delivery of advanced electronic solutions for pumping applications that set new standards for reliability, efficiency, and performance. The successful candidate will play a pivotal part in driving excellence in electronics engineering, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and technical rigor across multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management:
- Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing electronics design team, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and career development support.
- Set clear objectives, manage performance, and conduct regular appraisals to ensure a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
- Recruit, onboard, and retain top engineering talent in line with Watson Marlow’s growth strategy and values.
Project Management:
- Spearhead the planning and execution of electronics design projects from concept through to production, meeting timeline, budget, and quality objectives.
- Liaise closely with cross-functional teams—including mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineers—to ensure seamless integration of electronic systems into complete product solutions.
- Oversee risk management procedures, design verification processes, and ensure robust documentation at all stages of the project lifecycle.
Technical Excellence:
- Drive technological innovation by staying abreast of emerging trends in electronics, sensor technologies, embedded systems, and regulatory standards relevant to fluid management and process industries.
- Establish and uphold best practices in circuit design, PCB layout, embedded firmware, and hardware-software integration.
- Review technical designs, schematics, and prototypes, ensuring compliance with internal and external standards, including EMC, safety, and environmental regulations.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication:
- Act as the main point of contact for electronics design matters within the business, communicating progress, risks, and opportunities to senior management and other stakeholders.
- Work closely with product management, sales, and customer support teams to translate market requirements and customer feedback into innovative design solutions.
- Participate in customer visits, technical demonstrations, and field trials to ensure products meet customer needs and exceed expectations.
Continuous Improvement & Quality:
- Promote a culture of quality, reliability, and continuous improvement throughout the electronics engineering group.
- Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for product or process failures.
- Champion the adoption of modern design methodologies, such as Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Testability (DFT), and robust prototyping techniques.
Budgeting & Resource Allocation:
- Develop and manage budgets for the electronics design function, ensuring optimal allocation of resources across projects.
- Monitor expenditure, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure project delivery within agreed financial parameters.
Skills/Experience:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. A Master’s or PhD is advantageous.
- Experience: Proven track record (minimum 7 years) in electronics design and development, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role within a high-technology, regulated industry—preferably industrial automation, instrumentation, or fluid management sectors.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Expertise in analogue and digital circuit design, PCB layout, and embedded firmware development (C/C++, VHDL/Verilog, etc.).
- Proficient with electronics CAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, Eagle) and simulation software.
- Experience with design for EMC, safety standards (e.g., CE, UL), and product certification processes.
- Strong understanding of sensor technologies, signal processing, power electronics, and system integration challenges.
- Knowledge of IoT, wireless communication protocols, and cybersecurity for embedded systems is highly desirable.
- Project Management: Demonstrated experience managing multiple, complex projects simultaneously, delivering on time and within budget.
- People Management: Ability to inspire, coach, and develop engineering talent while fostering an inclusive, collaborative team culture.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills to interact effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities, with a pragmatic, solutions-oriented mindset.
