Apprenticeships are very high-profile within HSBC and the effective support, development and retention of all types of learners is important to the bank. From 2019 onwards HSBC UK has run a new-to-bank Degree Apprenticeship Programme across Commercial Banking and Wealth & Personal Banking. Our programmes have adapted and developed throughout this time, building strong relationships with key stakeholders, to ensure a holistic experience for both the Early Careers (EC) community and the business, whilst aligning to the Emerging Talent UK strategy and meeting apprenticeship standards.


We are seeking a new Degree Apprenticeship Programme Specialist. This role will support the management and execution of the end-to-end Degree Apprenticeship Development Programme within HSBC UK in line with the overall Emerging Talent strategy. Working closely with our Programme Leads, other Programme Specialists and wider Emerging Talent team you will maintain our brand reputation and standards of excellence for our Degree Apprenticeship programme.


The base location for this role is 1CS Birmingham with a minimum of 60% (3-days) in office expectation. We embrace a hybrid approach to working by balancing customer, team, and individual needs.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Individual responsibility for overseeing c.40-50 Degree Apprentices as their Programme Specialist will be an expectation of this role. You will be required to meet with DAs quarterly (virtual or in person) to discuss their progress and development through the apprenticeship programme, to ensure apprenticeship standards are met and all milestones are on track.
  • Undertake all programme and talent management deliverables for the role, including (but not limited to);
  • Liaise with your respective Programme Lead and other Programme Specialists to manage stakeholder expectations and understand business priorities and strategy.
  • Become a subject matter expert in our Degree Apprenticeship programme and build trust based relationships with learners and our training providers.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure all deliverables are met for the programme management (process not limited to Degree Apprentices), ensuring all placements meet the established placement standards.
  • Involvement in project management and implementation of on-going learning interventions and post programme activities for Degree Apprentices.
  • Participate in the delivery of Onboarding and Induction activities as directed by the ET Events & Projects Manager. This will involve the delivery and facilitation of individual sessions. Your attendance at the in-person Induction week for your programme is mandatory.
  • Ensure accurate apprenticeship, performance, talent, and placement data is collated, recorded, and monitored.
  • Always represent the Emerging Talent programme by building a network of contacts across HSBC UK and the wider People, Governance & Communications infrastructure teams.


The ideal candidate for this role will have:

  • Every day is different and experience of working of managing multiple deliverables/projects over a cyclical working cycle would be beneficial.
  • Ability to work at pace and manage competing priorities daily.
  • Take personal responsibility for understanding and agreeing performance expectations to work with minimal supervision and guidance to develop the levels of capability and competence needed to be effective in the role.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills; an ability to communicate with impact across multiple stakeholder groups is essential.
  • Passion for ensuring the governance of Degree Apprentices progression in their apprenticeship journey and experience of coaching individuals at different stages of their career journey would be advantageous.
  • An understanding of Level 6 and/or Financial Services apprenticeship programmes and training providers would be advantageous.
  • Experienced use of Microsoft office tools including word and excel as well as MS Teams.
