The Plant Team at Network Rail’s Technical Authority ensures the reliability, safety, and compliance of essential railway equipment and machinery. This expert group covers areas from engineering and maintenance to regulatory compliance, overseeing design standards, competency, assurance, product acceptance, and leading plant working groups. They drive innovation to enhance performance while maintaining strict safety protocols, supporting a robust, future-ready railway infrastructure.
We’re hiring! If you're an experienced plant engineer seeking a permanent role, join us as a Senior Engineer in Milton Keynes. You’ll lead work on Mobile and Fixed Plant assets, ensuring their design, performance, and compliance meet industry and regulatory standards.
What does the average day look like?
We are seeking an experienced Plant Engineer who is not only technically proficient within the Mobile and Fixed Plant asset categories, but also passionate about driving positive change within the plant discipline. If you have experience in competency, assurance, accident and incident investigations, policy development, Plant operations, design and strategic planning, you're exactly who we need!
On an average day, you'll act as the go-to expert in your specialist area, offering technical advice and best practice guidance. Your work will involve supporting incident investigations, analysing technical issues, and assessing the capability and performance of designs and options. You'll help deliver activities in line with Network Rail policies, legislation, and international standards, while contributing to the development and implementation of operational processes. From supporting strategy and product development to identifying defects and managing corrective actions, your role will be varied and impactful. You'll also conduct risk assessments, develop mitigation plans, and evaluate technical data to ensure asset reliability. Information management, engineering verification, and record-keeping are part of your routine, and you may also lead as a Delivery Manager for specific projects, ensuring they meet time, cost, and quality targets.
Essential Criteria
- Relevant Qualification: HNC/HND (or equivalent) in engineering, or equivalent experience (Level 4/5)
- Proven Experience: Significant experience in a related engineering field
- Industry Knowledge: Strong understanding of relevant policies, standards, and regulations
- Safety Expertise: Solid grasp of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Understanding of Plant competencies such as On Track Plant.
- Experienced in Mobile or Fixed Plant equipment ideally in the rail environment.
- Broad technical engineering experience.
Desirable
- IEng Status
- Knowledge of software systems such as Power BI.
- Experience in undertaking assurance activities involving audits and engineering verifications.
- Project delivery.
- Management and leadership experience.
