- Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Roles within Permanent Way Engineering are responsible for delivering new products, and maintenance procedures which reduce the whole life cost, and improve reliability & safety of the track. This includes the introduction of new components, technologies and activities which are managed through to approval and handover into installation & regular maintenance.
The teams are responsible for the management of the track standards and associated formal documentation on behalf of the Head of Permanent Way Engineering. This will require you to be capable of understanding how requirements and processes are developed, documented and maintained to reflect the operational railways within TfL.
Above all you will need to be able to challenge standards through demonstrating an ability to understand the ‘why’ rather than the ‘what’. You will need to demonstrate how As Low As Reasonably Practical (ALARP) principles can be used to justify risk based decisions which affect the overall safety of the railway.
You will need to have a passion for understanding how the track operates within a system of systems, and be capable of working alongside, among others, rolling stock and signalling engineers to be capable of solving problems which need systems approaches. You will need to be a person who is able to understand very complex detail but be able to communicate this to a wide range of stakeholders within the overall TfL structure . You will need to be able to manage your workload and able to progress and deliver multiple work streams involving various stakeholders to deadlines dictated by business demands.

Key Accountabilities
- Test site management of new products under trial within the Approved Product Register process
- Develop technical specifications for tendering exercises for track components carried out by procurement
- Undertake detailed technical investigations into track component failures and produce written and oral reports to the highest standards.
- Develop risk-based arguments which are capable of challenging the status quo of standards to improve the performance of the track asset
- Identify cost savings through whole life costing of components and construct business case arguments to assess the impacts of decisions made throughout the product lifecycle
Skills
- You will have the ability to communicate both orally and written with a variety of audiences (Essential)
- Develop relationships with key stakeholders including Suppliers, Designers, Renewal and Line teams to identify issues at all stages of the track lifecycle.
- Be capable of managing your own workload (multiple projects), working as both an individual and within a team with minimal supervision (Essential)
- Identify the key information and trends within large datasets through advanced computer skills (Essential)
- Ability to model different track loading scenarios and identify the implications through simulation in vehicle dynamics or finite element analysis (Desirable).
Knowledge
- Hold a degree in engineering (Desirable)
- Hold or be working towards chartered / incorporated engineer status through a recognised institution (Desirable)
- Risk management and the ALARP principles (Essential)
- Knowledge of systems (ideally within a railway setting) and how the interfaces are managed (Desirable)
- Knowledge of the use and application of industry standards. (Essential)
Experience
- Experience of working within a complex system with multiple interfaces and risks (Desirable)
- Working in a highly technical environment where you will be required to defend and explain your work to non-technical audiences (Desirable)
- Experience of using multiple data sets to make informed decisions (Desirable)
