Engineering Manager - Leading Commerce Platform· £110k - Checkout team

I am supporting a Leading Global Commerce Company who are building and scaling a high‑traffic, high‑stakes commerce platform (used by millions of people every year)

Their systems support complex transactional flows, extreme traffic spikes, and real‑time availability!

They are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead 1-2 squads in their checkout team. With this in mind, any experience to high traffic ecommerce/ retail, checkouts, catalogues is a big plus!

You won’t be expected to code day‑to‑day BUT you will be close to the technology, architecture, and delivery decisions that keep the platform running under pressure. Having a solid background and understanding of software engineering & quality standards is a must!

What you’ll be responsible for

Building, coaching, and supporting a high‑performing engineering team
Creating clarity around priorities, goals, and delivery momentum
Protecting the team’s focus while managing dependencies and risk

Leading teams working on transactional, event‑driven backend systems

Partnering with senior engineers on architecture, reliability, and scalability

Ensuring strong practices around AWS, CI/CD, observability, and security

Communicating clearly with non‑technical stakeholders and influencing decisions

Fostering a culture of inclusion, learning, and continuous improvement

The kind of systems your team works on

Node.js & TypeScript backend services (React.js/ next.js frontend)
AWS‑based, serverless architectures (Lambda, eventing, managed services)
Event‑driven systems supporting real‑time and asynchronous flows
APIs consumed by multiple internal and external clients
Platforms that must hold up during peak demand and on‑sale events

What they’re looking for

Experience leading and growing engineering teams
A strong technical foundation with their stack (ideally)
Experience working with cloud‑native architectures (AWS preferred)

Familiarity with event‑driven and transactional systems

Confidence balancing short‑term delivery with long‑term technical health

Excellent communication skills across engineering, product, and the wider business

A calm, pragmatic leadership style in fast‑moving environments

Nice to have

Experience in e‑commerce, payments, or high‑traffic platforms
Exposure to cost optimisation, vendor management, or budgets
Knowledge of monitoring, alerting, and incident management practices
Experience scaling teams or operating in distributed environments
