The purpose of this role is to lead the design, development, and delivery of scalable, reliable, and high-quality software solutions. It drives technical excellence by establishing engineering standards, guiding architectural decisions, and ensuring that delivery outcomes meet business objectives.

This role also fosters innovation, supports team development, and provides visible leadership across engineering teams and stakeholders, ensuring alignment from architecture through to execution.

Key Responsibilities

• Leading architecture and design sessions, ensuring solutions are logical, scalable, and aligned with engineering standards.
• Drive delivery outcomes, managing sprint execution, resolving technical blockers, and maintaining accountability for quality.
• Embed a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, and structured problem-solving.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentoring engineers, and guiding architecture and system design decisions.
• Promote engineering best practices and technical standards across teams.
• Manage and develop teams, including permanent and contingent resources, ensuring alignment, engagement, and performance.
• Serve as the main point of contact for delivery risks, dependencies, and stakeholder communications, providing clear updates for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Manage resource allocation, capacity planning, and prioritisation across multiple teams and deliveries.
• Oversee end-of-life systems and technical debt, ensuring timely prioritisation, stakeholder alignment, and delivery of remediation activities.
• Identify gaps in current practices and drive initiatives to improve throughput, quality, reliability, and documentation, using metrics and structured problem-solving.
• Collaborate with Lead Engineers and Architects to ensure alignment with broader technical direction.

What We’re Looking For

• Proven delivery experience in financial services as a senior engineer, architect, or technical lead/ manager.
• Hands-on leadership experience of managing multiple engineering teams, guiding architecture, design, and complex problem-solving.
• Experience in major transformation projects, managing multiple teams and complex delivery streams
• Strong structured, algorithmic thinking applied to real-world technical challenges.
• Track record of defining and improving engineering standards, processes, and best practices.
• Experience in agile delivery, accountable for sprint outcomes, technical quality, and stakeholder communication.
• Skilled in resource management and capacity planning, including permanent and contingent teams.
• Excellent communicator, able to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience preparing executive updates, technical summaries, and risk assessments for senior stakeholders.
• Solid understanding of CI/CD, automation, observability, and DevOps practices, with experience driving adoption of new tools, frameworks, or processes.
