Environmental Technician to join our expanding team in
Southampton, UK.
The Role:
The specific function is to provide technician support to the wider business on a variety of contracts as well as monitoring and sampling for external companies and Councils. This presents a fantastic opportunity for any individuals looking to enter the environmental sector, or a current environmental professional who wants to develop a wider range of monitoring and surveying skills. The work will provide invaluable experience of working within an award winning, multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy and as such will require individuals to have a flexible attitude to work.
The successful candidate will develop a wide range of different skills and work on many different project types. There will be the possibility for career progression within Structural Soils Ltd and the wider RSK Group.
This is a fulltime role whereby you will be trained in a wide range of monitoring and sampling disciplines and will gain valuable experience working with the wider RSK group of companies.
The role is field based as the successful candidate would be visiting different sites throughout the week, we are looking for the right candidate to cover sites predominantly across the South of England, so a home base in the area between Heathrow and Southampton would be ideal. A combination of base offices can be used for storage, sample submission and office facilities.
Responsibilities:
The types of activities that the successful candidate could expect to be involved with include:
- Environmental monitoring (Waters, Gas, Leachate, Air, Soil)
- Gas, Soils and Water Sampling
- Closed landfill monitoring and sampling
- Contaminated Land Assessment – data collection
- Surveying techniques
- Continuous gas and water monitoring techniques.
- Hydrogeological testing – Variable Head Tests, Constant Flow, Pneumatic Slug Testing
- Telemetry and datalogging equipment installation and maintenance
- Geotechnical monitoring techniques – Inclinometer, Extensometer, VWP
Person Specification:
This post would ideally suit a practically minded graduate with a mature approach to work or someone who hasn’t chosen an academic route but has more practical based experience. Science Degree or A-Levels would be an advantage, but not essential.
You will work alone on some projects but as part of a supportive team. A mixture of external training courses and in house training will provide the knowledge and skills required to carry out tasks in the areas of surveying, collection of samples and data using cutting edge equipment and techniques. The job will involve driving, lifting and carrying samples and equipment.
You will need to follow operational guidance and adhere to current Health and Safety procedures. Ultimately, the individual must want to pursue a career within the Environmental Sector. Desirable qualities and skills include:
- Practical mindset and experience i.e. technical field work etc
- Experience and ability to work outside in all seasons
- Good attention to detail and the ability to take on new concepts is essential.
- Full clean driving licence as travel will be required
- Confident to work on your own and as part of a team
- Happy to work across the UK from time to time to suit business needs, including staying overnight in company provided accommodation when required.
- Flexible as regards to out of hours and weekend work – additional hours worked would be given back in lieu at a time to suit the business.
Salary and benefits:
- Salary £26,000 per annum
- 31 days annual leave (including Bank Holidays), rising to 36 for extended service.
