About the role:

The Economics team are responsible for producing a global forecast and an economic story to support that view. They communicate this directly to clients, and provide it to the teams analysing specific commodities as an important input to their micro analysis of commodity markets. The team also contribute to our understanding of how decarbonisation and climate change will shape the global economy and commodity sectors

We are looking to recruit an Economist to analyse and forecast the European economy. The primary focus will be on the Eurozone, but the role will also cover the UK, Turkey and Russia.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the analysis of European economies, with a primary focus on the Eurozone; shape forecast judgments and communicate your views to clients, prospects, and colleagues across CRU; closely monitor data and evolving economic developments.
  • Produce monthly forecasts for GDP, industrial production, inflation, interest rates, and other relevant variables, using the Oxford Economics Global Macro Model and your own judgment.
  • Translate the macro view into actionable implications for metals markets, presenting insights in a way that maximises value for clients; build expertise in these markets by absorbing knowledge from clients and colleagues.
  • Contribute to CRU thought leadership by documenting insights on topics such as European fiscal policy, construction, and consumer spending.
  • Support the broader team with data collection, chart preparation, presentations, and spreadsheet enhancements as needed.


Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Economics.


Skills & Experience:

  • Strong quantitative background in economics
  • An organised approach to data handling and econometric modelling
  • Previous experience in analysis or forecasting is advantageous
  • Knowledge of sustainability and the energy transition is advantageous
  • Keen interest in applying economic thinking to real-world business challenges
  • Interest in economic policy and its interaction with economics
  • Goal-oriented with energy and enthusiasm
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Creative thinker who can present information visually
  • Positive, proactive attitude
  • Excellent written and spoken English, and strong presentation skills
  • Confidence engaging with a range of clients, internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent data manipulation skills in Excel, and proficiency with PowerPoint and Word
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, or E-views)
  • Ability to write clearly and communicate it confidently to others
