Job Summary

The Toxicology Department provides Public Health advice to other parts of RCCE, the Department of Health and Social Care and other Government departments and agencies, Local Authorities and other stakeholders including members of the public on the risks to health from environmental hazards (chemicals, particles and bioaerosols). The Toxicology Department undertakes research that underpins chemical regulation and policy development. All of the research underpins the UKHSA role in public health protection from environmental hazards. The Department has an important role in providing scientific secretariat and administration support to two DHSC committees (Committee on Carcinogenicity and Committee on Mutagenicity, COC and COM) and scientific support to the Committee on Toxicity, COT and provides evidence and advice to protect health from Radiation, Chemicals, Climate and Environmental Hazards. To support evidence-anchored advice for Health Security, RCCE undertakes research work with various university partners and other organisations including within Health Protection Research Units (HPRUs) supported by the National Institutes of Health Research (NIHR).

Radiation, Chemicals, Climate and Environmental Hazards (RCCE) provides evidence and advice to protect health from Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards. To support evidence-anchored advice for Health Security, RCCE undertakes research work with various university partners and other organisations including within Health Protection Research Units (HPRUs) supported by the National Institutes of Health Research (NIHR).

The role provides comprehensive personal assistant and business support to the Head of Department and Department staff. The Department supports a wide ranging portfolio of work, including programmes on Experimental Toxicology, General Toxicology and Biomonitoring, Analytical Toxicology and also an International Regulation Group.

Job Description

The postholder will be required to carry out a wide range of administrative and support duties including diary management, drafting correspondence, arranging travel, overseeing staff training completion and records, collating information and arranging and attending meetings as minute taker. On occasions the postholder may have to assist in emergency response incidents or exercises. The role also includes provision of support to the DHSC Committees on Toxicity, Carcinogenicity and Mutagenicity (COT, COC and COM); some scientific support to these Committees is provided through an external contract.

The Main Duties Are As Follows:

To provide Personal Assistant support to the Department Head and administrative support to the other staff of the Toxicology Department and secretariat support to a number of independent expert committees that provide advice on the health effects of chemicals.

Secretarial

• Required secretarial support for Department Head and Department staff
• Management of Department diaries
• Minute secretary for departmental, RCCE Committees and UKHSA meetings (agenda, collating paperwork and preparing files, minutes, tracking actions etc) Record keeping

Maintain RCCE Seminar Series, liaise with external speakers, oversee events and process any honorarium and expense payments.

HR/Staff

• Recording of leave and sickness absence for Department staff
• Support for recruitment processes and staff changes
• Arrange UK travel for Department staff – rail, car hire, hotel bookings
• Process overseas travel for Department staff including costing, conference registration, travel bookings, visas et

Preparing correspondence, formatting reports, contracts etc in line with UKHSA guidelines

• Resolve facilities or IT related issues raised within the Department by liaising with the relevant departments
• Assist senior staff with high level administrative support for scientific correspondence, scientific committees, national and international projects

Incident logging duties (when required)

Business and Financial Support

• Keeping financial records, arranging honorarium payments and expenses for committee members
• Provide resilience/support as required for the routine business support functions undertaken by the Department
• Maintain office supplies and equipment and provide support in relation to the MaPS service which will include placing orders, completing timesheets and expenses

Location

This role is being offered as office/lab based at our Scientific Campus in Chilton.

Based at our scientific campus, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. Salary Information

If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply.
