JOB DESCRIPTION: EXHIBITION ENGAGEMENT ASSISTANT
HOURS: 14 days (7.5 hour day)
PROJECT LENGTH: 4 months September 2025 – January 2026
FEE: £200/day
CONTRACT: Freelance
LOCATION: Most work can be done remotely with some in person work at the Cambridge Corn Exchange offices at Parson’s Court, Cambridge.
DAYS OF WORKING: There is flexibility as to pattern of working. Days can be spaced evenly across the work period or can be grouped in larger and smaller sections.

Purpose of this role:
This exhibition engagement assistant role is an exciting opportunity to be part of a heritage project in celebration of 150 years of Cambridge Corn Exchange. You will be supporting the development of learning and engagement resources for an exhibition to be launched in the building in February 2026.
About this Project:
Thanks to National Lottery players, this heritage project aims to uncover, celebrate and share the heritage of the Cambridge Corn Exchange building, making its 150th anniversary in 2025. It will include a period of archive and heritage research, led by a specialist, to gather a collection of archive materials, oral histories and research about the heritage of the Cambridge Corn Exchange and its relevance to communities today. This will be delivered alongside a public engagement and schools programme, including a public digital exhibition. It will culminate in new creative content and a public exhibition in the building, to be launched in February 2026.
Main Responsibilities of this role:
● To develop a school’s archive box based on the history of Cambridge Corn Exchange and the themes from the exhibition. Some existing resources exist to support this.
● To develop three lesson plans to accompany the schools archive box.
● To support the compilation of a book containing the creative writing submissions from the children who have taken part in school workshops as part of the project to be launched at the exhibition.
● To support the development of engagement activities and resources included in the temporary exhibition.
● To assist in the delivery of public engagement events championing the history of Cambridge Corn Exchange when needed.
● To support the Heritage Project Manager and Archive Research Manager with exhibition copy editing.
● To work closely with the Heritage Project Manager to support the audience development and engagement aims of the exhibition.
● To comply with all legislation including GDPR and IP for the project.
● To support the evaluation of the project.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Essential Skills and Experience:
● Experience of developing activities and resources for younger audiences
● Experience of working in museums or cultural organisations
● Excellent organisational skills needed to plan time and meet objectives
● Excellent written and verbal communication
● Experience of writing for a variety of audiences
● Proactive attitude and ability to manage own workload
● Positive and open attitude to learning and skills development
● Ability to multitask and prioritise workload
● Good attention to detail
● Computer literacy including MS Office packages and Outlook
Desirable Skills and Experience:
● Experience of engaging a range of younger audiences in a museum or cultural organisational setting
● Experience of supporting the development/delivery of heritage exhibitions/displays
● Experience supporting evaluation in a heritage project.
