About The Role
To act as a deputy to the Financial Controller, assisting with the accounting, reporting and year end audit processes within the financial control function. The role will also take primary responsibility for project and cost accounting within one of the entities as it transitions to the new ERP system. This includes implementing tailored procedures for tracking, reconciling, and reporting capital and operating expenditure, and acting as the main point of contact for supplier finance teams to ensure accuracy and timeliness throughout the process. In addition, the role delivers financial insights and performance analysis to support strategic decision-making and maintain strong financial control across the entity’s projects and operations.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Supporting the delivery of core financial processes including accounts payable, financial close, and management reporting across the business.
- Lead the month-end close process for a designated entity, including preparation of journal entries, completion of data-intensive calculations, and reconciliation of project-related financial data.
- Oversee the preparation and analysis of monthly management accounts, ensuring compliance with IFRS and delivery of accurate variance reporting to support informed business decisions.
- Manage and report on project and cost accounting activities, including the analysis of capital and operating expenditure, contractor dashboards, and cost performance metrics.
- Partner with Programme Managers and key suppliers to assess financial progress, review supplier dashboards, and recommend actions to support financial control and project success.
- Prepare internal cost studies, project evaluations, and periodic reporting for both internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Ensure timely, auditable, and well-documented records of all financial activities, including fixed asset maintenance, work-in-progress segmentation, and project lifecycle tracking.
- Present financial reporting packages, including Income Statement, Balance Sheet, project statistics, and budget variance analysis, to senior stakeholders and board-level audiences.
- Collaborate across departments to support the financial needs of operations, commercial, and project delivery teams, providing ad hoc analysis as required.
- Lead or participate in finance transformation initiatives, identifying areas for automation or digital optimisation to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
- Support the enhancement and enforcement of financial controls to ensure compliance, minimise risk, and protect company assets.
- Provide guidance or mentoring to junior finance staff, supporting talent development within the team and succession planning.
- Act as a finance business partner to operational leads, ensuring alignment between financial insights and project delivery objectives.
- Perform other relevant duties as directed by management.
- Assist the wider Group Reporting Team with ad-hoc technical accounting projects and cross-entity initiatives as required.
- Coordinate internally the completion of quarterly group reporting templates, inclusive of FAR, leases, reconciliations, and supporting analysis.
- Support the review and coordination of tax-related processes including VAT, PAYE, PSA, and year-end corporation tax submissions.
- Coordinate, monitor, and, where needed by the Financial Controller, step in to resolve outstanding audit or reporting items — acting as a hands-on contributor ("do-er").
What You’ll Bring
- ACA/CA/ACCA or overseas equivalent accounting qualification required
- Minimum 5 years post qualified audit experience with Big 4/top tier accounting firm background
- Proven experience managing the full lifecycle of project financials, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost tracking for capital and operational projects.
- Hands-on experience maintaining project budgets in line with funding, scope, and timeline constraints.
- Acted as the primary finance contact for external suppliers and contractors regarding project invoicing, cost validation, and milestone payments.
- Good working knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
- Knowledge of consolidation principles, multilocation and multi currency environment
- Proven Accounting experience, with knowledge of practices, standards, systems and processes Experience dealing with Fixed Assets, Cost Accounting on multiple projects
- Knowledge of financial terms and principles and IFRS
- Experience within public accounting firm with commercial experience ideally within the Construction (or similar) industry.
- Analytical & quantitative skills, attention to detail/accuracy, problem solving skills
- Accounting Software Systems and Applications. Workday (preferred).
