FPGA Engineer

Position Available: FPGA Engineer

Location: Essex

Experience needed: We're looking for an FPGA Engineer with strong VHDL design skills and a background working with tools like Microchip Libero and/or Xilinx Vivado. You'll have a good understanding of full lifecycle FPGA development and ideally experience supporting complex, multidisciplinary engineering projects.

About the role:

We're hiring a Senior or Principal FPGA Engineer to join our high-performance engineering team, developing next-generation Front-End Electronics (FEE) for space-based applications.

You'll be a key contributor in a multi-disciplinary environment, writing VHDL code for FPGA systems, developing new designs and improving existing ones. Your role will span from initial concept and requirements definition through to functional verification, testing, and delivery. You'll collaborate closely with software, electronics, and systems engineers to develop robust, high-reliability solutions that meet demanding space standards.

Alongside development responsibilities, you'll also support technical bids and business development efforts-bringing your insight to proposals, costings, and trade studies.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and develop FPGA code using VHDL
• Use development environments such as Microchip Libero and Xilinx Vivado
• Create functional verification testbenches and perform simulation
• Apply timing constraints and perform detailed timing analysis
• Work across the full development lifecycle-from requirements to delivery
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to architect FPGA solutions
• Produce clear technical documentation, including design specs and test plans
• Support technical bid writing, effort estimation, and trade-off analysis
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of FPGA design processes and standards

What we need from you:

• 3+ years' experience in industrial FPGA design using VHDL
• Experience with Microchip Libero and/or Xilinx Vivado
• Proven ability to develop and verify testbenches and constraints
• Strong understanding of full FPGA development lifecycle
• Confidence using lab test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analysers, etc.)
• Ability to produce clear, accurate documentation and estimates
