General Foreman - Civil Engineering (Power & Energy)
Location: Regional Office - Cumbernauld
Business Context:
We are seeking an experienced General Foreman with a solid background in managing projects for Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN). This role is set within a dynamic project and maintenance environment, where you will oversee various multi-disciplinary civil engineering projects. Our regional team delivers infrastructure projects and maintenance for a diverse clientele, including Local Authorities, Network Rail, and Environmental Agencies.
Our current portfolio features several live infrastructure projects and long-term renewal and maintenance frameworks such as the Civils Asset Management (CAM), Renewals Enhancement Framework (REF), and a Slabtrack framework. These projects encompass a wide range of civil engineering works including highways, bridges (footbridges, under, over), tunnels, earthworks, flood alleviation, and rail station infrastructure.
Role Summary:
As General Foreman, you will manage the delivery of civil works in a substation environment, ensuring all projects meet safety standards, timelines, and quality expectations. You will lead teams involved in the installation, inspection, and maintenance of infrastructure, including substations, overhead lines, and underground cabling on behalf of Scottish Power & Energy Networks. Your role will require strong leadership, technical knowledge, and problem-solving skills to effectively manage workforce dynamics and resolve on-site challenges.
Key Responsibilities: - Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all employees and others under your control, adhering to the Supervisors Health and Safety Responsibility Statement.
- Implement all company and client Health & Safety and Environmental initiatives effectively.
- Report any unsafe practices promptly.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and best practices.
- Lead, supervise, utilise, and monitor both direct and subcontract labour effectively.
- Deliver works within the specified programme and budget, ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation:
- Contract Terms and Conditions
- Contract Health and Safety Plan
- Contract Quality/Environmental Plan
- Client approved Works Package Plans and Task Briefing Sheets
- Approved Construction Drawings and Specifications
- Company Business Management System Policies and Procedures
- Achieve quality standards and ensure works are "right first time."
- Monitor work progress continuously to meet contract objectives.
- Identify, agree, implement, and manage changes to the scope of works effectively.
- Maintain robust records (diaries, allocation sheets, plant details, etc.).
- Provide formal progress reports to the Project Manager/Site Agent.
- Escalate unresolved issues to the Project Manager/Site Agent.
- Identify and implement training needs for directly employed operatives under your control.
Requirements:
To succeed in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications and experience:
- Demonstrated experience as a General Foreman in a power and energy or civil engineering project environment.
- Valid SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) certification.
- Strong leadership, technical acumen, and problem-solving skills to manage workforce dynamics effectively.
- SPEN Authorisations in accordance with the 5th Edition Safety Rules.
- Valid CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
