What will this role achieve?
The Global Head of Food Safety and Defence leads the design, governance, and execution of global food safety and defence programmes across all operations, ensuring products are safe, consistent, and compliant with regulatory and customer standards. The role provides strategic leadership to prevent and respond to adulteration, tampering, extortion, and emerging threats, acting as the organisation’s top expert in food safety science, microbiology, contaminants, toxicology, allergen management, hygiene, and food defence.
What will be your key deliverables?
1. Global Strategy & Governance
Define and lead the enterprise-wide food safety and defence strategy, establishing global policies, standards, and KPIs, and ensuring integration of food safety into all business decisions across innovation, supply chain, and operations.
2. Food Safety Systems & Compliance
Oversee global implementation of HACCP, GMP, allergen management, and sanitation programmes, ensuring compliance with BRCGS, FSSC 22000, ISO 22000, and customer requirements, while leading audits and risk assessments for high-risk ingredients.
3. Food Defence & Product Security
Drive vulnerability assessments (TACCP/VACCP) and mitigation plans, coordinating with key functions to protect facilities, materials, and processes from intentional harm, and managing product security across logistics and distribution channels.
4. Incident Management & Crisis Response
Act as global technical expert during food safety and defence incidents, leading root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive measures, and partnering with Legal, Communications, and Regulatory teams during crises.
5. Scientific Leadership & Innovation
Provide technical leadership on food safety science, microbiology, toxicology, and emerging risks, guiding R&D and Operations on hygienic design and new technologies, and conducting horizon scanning for global risks and regulatory changes.
6. Talent, Training & Culture
Build a high-performing global food safety and defence team, developing competency frameworks, training, and certification programmes, and fostering a proactive food safety culture across all organisational levels.
7. External Engagement & Advocacy
Represent the company in global regulatory forums and industry alliances, build partnerships with academia and external experts, and benchmark industry best practices to integrate learnings into company standards.
