Newham is one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs in England and Wales. Host to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and home to the largest urban regeneration site in Europe, Newham boasts a vibrant and thriving culture and community.
Are you passionate about social and environmental justice? Do you want to help shape a fairer, greener Newham?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone with a keen political instinct and great organisational skills to work with the Green Group of Councillors of Newham Council.
Newham’s Green Group of councillors are looking for a Political Assistant to support the aspirations of our radical policy programme, hold the Labour administration to account, and communicate our agenda to the borough. This is a pivotal role at the heart of one of the most exciting Green Party teams in London — working directly with our three councillors to make an impact on one of the youngest, most diverse boroughs in the UK.
- Support the Green Group’s work at Council by ensuring councillors are fully briefed and prepared for Committees, Full Council, and other key meetings — helping to ensure strong, clear and constructive Green contributions.
- Track and analyse Government and local policies to assess their impact on the borough, and help develop responses rooted in the needs of Newham’s communities.
- Proactively identify emerging issues in the borough, conduct research, and help shape Green responses — both in terms of policy and communications.
- Lead on communications, including writing press releases, newsletters, social media content, quotes and speeches to share our vision for a fairer, more sustainable Newham. You’ll help develop a compelling Green narrative that cuts through in a Labour-dominated borough.
- Act as the key liaison between Green councillors and Council officers, ensuring the Group’s priorities are clearly understood and reflected in policy discussions and decisions.
- Build relationships across the borough — from community organisations and local media to residents and campaigners — helping the Green Group stay connected and responsive.
You’ll work closely with the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Green Group, and play a vital role in helping the Group communicate and implement our policy agenda and hold the administration to account.
About You
- You are committed to the values and politics of the Green Party.
- You have experience working in a political or campaigning environment, and are confident providing clear political advice based on research and insight.
- You’re a strong communicator, able to write with clarity and purpose across a range of formats — and ideally have experience using digital tools, social media and short-form video to reach audiences effectively.
- You have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, can handle competing demands, and are comfortable working under pressure and with minimal supervision.
- You are collaborative and approachable, with the ability to build trust with councillors, officers, community groups, journalists and residents alike.
Working with us
Newham is one of London’s youngest and most vibrant boroughs — but also one of its most unequal. The Green Group is fighting for change: for climate action, fairer housing, democratic accountability and better outcomes for all residents. You’ll play a vital role in helping us hold the Council to account, campaign for better policies, and amplify the voices of local people.
We’re committed to building a diverse team and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. Experience matters, but so does passion — if you’re excited by the chance to help shape a better Newham, we want to hear from you.
