Job Summary
The Grid Connections Manager will support the design, development, and execution of battery energy storage projects within a company that has a growing nationwide pipeline of approximately 2GW, with individual projects ranging from 10MW to 100MW. As a Grid Connection Manager, you will oversee the grid connection process from project inception through to energisation. You'll work closely with distribution network operators (DNOs), transmission operators (TOs), independent connection providers (ICPs), and internal stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution.
Role And Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Delivery, as Grid Connections Manager, you will oversee the grid connection process
ensuring successful grid connection outcomes across Root-Powers UK battery energy storage portfolio. You'll
work closely with distribution network operators (DNOs), transmission operators (TOs), independent
connection providers (ICPs), and internal stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution.
Your Primary Responsibilities Will Include
Managing the Grid connections process for Root-Powers battery storage projects, including but not
Limited To
- Reviewing connection offers and curtailment data.
- Tracking and organising connections payments, milestones and securities across all BESS
projects and managing cashflows for the portfolio.
- Foster coordination and direct engagement with key stakeholders such as National Energy
System Operator (NESO), Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), and Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) post connection offer acceptance.
- Managing projects through the Statement of Works process.
- Conduct due diligence on grid-related opportunities.
Grid Sector Knowledge And Insights
- Monitoring the state of the grid network, providing regular reporting of grid reforms and
progress of relevant network reinforcements.
- Attending conferences and webinars held by the ENA, NGESO, Distribution Network Operators
and Transmission Operators.
- Acting as a company representative at industry events and networking functions.
- Engage with network operators, trade bodies, and technical stakeholders to drive policies that
facilitate renewable energy deployment. and other stakeholders post connection offer acceptance, including:
- Stay up to date with industry standards, implementing design and process improvements.
- Be the primary liaison with Independent Connection Providers (ICPs), independent DNOs (iDNOs)
- Support and coordinate non-contestable works tenders and selection of ICPs, including
defining employer requirements and evaluation of tender responses.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with approved ICPs and iDNOs.
- Act as a technical point of contact for internal project teams, contractors, and consultants,
ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
- Design and specify grid cable routes ensuring cost-effective solutions.
Managing the grid connection process from development though delivery, including:
- Develop and oversee in-house grid technical standards and tools
- Support value-engineering of project connection designs, delivery model, and preparing
baseline cashflows and budgets for grid connection works.
- Manage non-contestable work packages, reporting to the assigned senior project manager,
ensuring scheme designs and construction works are delivered in line with approved
programme whilst mitigating connection risks
- Manage interactions with DNOs, TOs, and third-party contractors, post-acceptance to ensure
smooth project progression.
- Serve as the go-to expert for grid design and technical matters throughout project
development and construction.
- Act as point of contact and ensure project designs meet NESO grid code compliance
requirements, liaising with relevant consultants and designers, so projects achieve the
relevant Operational Notices in line with the delivery schedule.
- Prepare and present technical reports and project updates to stakeholders, particularly on
electrical aspects and design coordination efforts.
Required Skills And Experience
The ideal candidate will be motivated and self-driven and will have a good up-to-date knowledge of the grid
network in the UK. They will have prior experience of managing grid connections, and experience liaising with DNOs and ICPs. The successful candidate will be responsible for the grid connections in Root-Powers Battery Storage portfolio from project inception through to energisation. They will be expected to be diligent and feel comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and managing the connections process for a large number of projects. They will need to be self-sufficient but enjoy working, collaborating and delivering within a team environment. Full end to end connection experience from application to energization would be preferred.
- Comprehensive understanding of the UK grid connection process, regulations and standards.
- Strong knowledge of renewable energy technology, with a focus on energy storage systems.
- Proven experience in grid management for utility-scale renewable projects.
- Strong understanding of grid infrastructure design and distribution/transmission networks and
associated equipment costs.
- Solid commercial awareness with a successful track record in managing grid offers and connection
agreements.
- Demonstrable experience resolving grid-related challenges, and mitigating connection issues or delays
- Experience conducting due diligence for potential project acquisitions with a high-level of attention to
detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong communication skills and structured approach to project execution.
- Experience with DIgSILENT or similar power modelling tools (highly advantageous).
- Experience of taking projects through NESO Grid Code Compliance process and achieving Operational
Notices (highly advantageous)
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Renewable Energy, Engineering, or a related field.
- 3 years of experience in grid connections within DNO, Developer/IPP, ICP etc.
- Proficient in AutoCAD
