Head of Data Technology, HSBC UK
Role Purpose:
Reporting into the Head of CTO Data Technology, the Head of Data Technology HSBC UK will have accountabilities for all HSBC UK data technologies and delivery of Data Strategy that benefit the HSBC UK business. The role holder will be accountable for strategic technology planning, transformation execution and budget delivery with the business.
The role holder will be accountable for the full lifecycle of HSBC UK data technology services to fulfill the data use case and regulatory requirements, for the HSBC UK business. This includes the strategic design, build quality and service uptime metrics. The role holder will govern the data applications to Group data standards and help the business and markets adopt Groupwide data capabilities & and associated tooling to solve complex and ambiguous problems across multiple markets.
The role holder will also partner with the technical domain leads, to adopt core and common reusable data technology components required across multiple value streams to deliver excellent results to difficult problems across multiple functions and geographies. They will require building engineering excellence within the team, collaboration with the business, and deliver against a strategic operating plan that ensures resources, including capability, people and funding, can improve current customer journeys, and deliver new features and compelling distinctly native services.
Accountable for implementation of HSBC UK data and wider data initiatives within the Group Data Strategy by working with global, regional and business and tech leads to provide optimised global services adjusted to address business demand solutions.
It is also imperative for the role holder to drive simplification of the data technology landscape through the partnership with business to modernize strategic applications and demise non-strategic ones in line with the Data Future State Architecture (FSA).
The key stakeholder for this role includes UK CDAO, HSBC UK business, Head of DAP and Group Data & Analytics Office, Global Head of Data technology and CIO HSBC UK.
Principle Accountabilities:
- End-to-End Ownership of Data Technology Services
Accountable for the full lifecycle of HSBC UK data technology services globally, including strategic design, build quality, and service uptime.
- Engineering Excellence & Digital Delivery
Drive engineering excellence and deliver digital solutions that enable data standardization and adoption across the business.
Deliver data strategy outcomes that align with Group and HSBC UK business priorities, ensuring strategic objectives are met.
- Commercialization of Data Capabilities
Commercialize data technology capabilities in line with HSBC UK’s business agenda, supporting business growth and innovation.
- Strategic Problem Solving & Modernization
Define, develop, and implement state-of-the-art strategies to solve complex and ambiguous problems using modern technology platforms and delivery disciplines.
- Team Leadership & Talent Development
Build and lead a high-performing engineering team, providing thought leadership and fostering collaboration across functions and geographies.
- Financial & Operational Optimization
Manage the annual budget for both new service development (Change The Bank) and existing service support (Run The Bank), optimizing operational costs, headcount, and resilience.
Essential Capabilities:
- Proven Technology Leadership
Demonstrated ability to drive the business agenda as an outstanding technology leader, inspiring teams and delivering results.
Extensive hands-on experience leading and influencing global technology teams within HSBC or similarly scaled matrix financial organizations.
Strong subject matter expertise in emerging data technologies, including Data & AI, with a track record of successful global delivery and regulatory compliance (e.g., Data Privacy & Localization).
- Operational & Commercial Acumen
Solid understanding of operational effectiveness, commercial orientation, and the ability to balance risk versus reward to maximize cost effectiveness and profitability.
- Change Leadership & Collaboration
Experience leading executive and non-executive work groups, effecting change through people, and fostering teamwork across diverse, multicultural environments.
- Cloud & Automation Proficiency
Comprehensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts, IT automation tools, and DevSecOps practices, with a focus on service and change delivery.
- Service & Incident Management
Strong background in service level management, incident management, and change management to ensure robust, resilient technology operations.
