Hiring: Head of Engineering (Hands-On | Startup | Data & AI)

Hybrid London (or UK-based with office access)

My client is a rapidly growing data & intelligence company transforming how brands measure and understand influence in the modern era.

They work with some of the world’s most recognisable brands and agencies, helping them understand what happened, why it happened, and what to do next through advanced analytics, AI, and high-quality insight.

They are now seeking an experienced Engineering Lead to take over responsibilities previously held by their outgoing SVP of Product, leading a multidisciplinary team across software engineering, data science, and machine learning.

This is a unique opportunity to shape technical direction, drive engineering excellence, and play a pivotal role in scaling a product that is redefining a global category.

🌟 Role Overview

As Engineering Lead, you will guide a cross-functional technical team while remaining hands-on (around 30–40% initially). You’ll set best practices, mentor engineers, influence product direction, and ensure the successful delivery of software and ML-driven features.

Technical Leadership

✨ Define engineering standards, best practices, and the technical roadmap

✨ Balance delivery speed with scalability, quality, and maintainability

✨ Lead technical decision-making and architectural direction

Hands-On Engineering

✨ Build key features, unblock work, and support complex implementations

✨ Contribute directly across frontend, backend, and ML integrations

Team Leadership & Growth

✨ Lead, mentor, and develop engineers, ML specialists, and data scientists

✨ Foster a culture of ownership, trust, learning, and collaboration

✨ Hire and scale the team as the business grows

Cross-Functional Collaboration

✨ Work closely with commercial, insights, product, and data teams

✨ Translate business goals into technical priorities

✨ Support revenue-driving initiatives through scalable tech solutions

Project & Delivery Management

✨ Oversee planning, execution, and delivery of software & ML projects

✨ Enable delivery through agile (Scrum/Kanban) ways of working

✨ Manage the team’s backlog, timelines, and risk

Technology & Architecture

✨ Guide the evolution of the company’s tech stack

✨ Contribute to scalable architecture across software and ML systems

✨ Evaluate new tools, processes, and technologies to improve efficiency

🔧 Ideal Experience

Essential:

✔ Strong TypeScript expertise

✔ Node.js & React

✔ Python experience

✔ Cloud experience (GCP preferred)

✔ Experience managing small engineering teams (4+)

✔ Early-stage or high-growth startup background

✔ Track record scaling teams (e.g., 4 → 10 engineers)

✔ Familiar with AI/LLM-integrated products

✔ Experience with Agile/Scrum delivery

Nice-to-Have:

• Experience leading data science / ML teams

• Background in MarTech, AdTech, measurement or panel data

• Creator economy interest or experience

• B2B SaaS / enterprise product experience

• Previous founding or early-hire experience
