Head of Internal Communications

My client is a high profile civic and social organisation who are going through an exciting time of transformation. They are seeking an Head of Internal Comms for a 9-month fixed-term contract. This senior role will establish robust internal communications infrastructure and deliver measurable improvements in employee engagement during a pivotal period of change. This role offers the opportunity to build professional internal communications capability from scratch, working directly with the Head of Communications and senior leadership team to shape how my client communicates with its people during this transformational period.

You will:

Conduct comprehensive internal communications audit and stakeholder mapping, defining targeted groups and communication levels
Develop internal communications strategy aligned to 2026-2030 strategic priorities
Design channel architecture and governance framework to streamline communication flows
Review and refocus digital communications channels, launching new platforms and retiring legacy systems

Create strategic internal communications calendar to manage timing and reduce noise

Document processes and create long-term implementation plan for sustainable communications capability

Develop leadership communication framework defining when messages come from CEO, CFOO, or SMT leads

Support CEO with key messaging and content development

Support ExCo with critical communications

Shape and deliver communications for senior leaders including key message updates

Ensure consistent narrative across all channels of communication

Lead internal communication for organisational change, transformation programme and major initiatives

Translate complex strategy and change into clear, relevant messages for different audiences

Address inconsistent messaging around strategic initiatives to reduce confusion and frustration

To be considered:

Significant senior internal communications experience, ideally at Head of level or equivalent
Experience of working in an organisation of a similar size (100-150 people), with an understanding of the complexities of this size of organisation.

Proven track record of leading cultural change communications

Demonstrable experience building internal communications infrastructure and capability from scratch or significantly developing existing functions

Executive-level stakeholder management experience with ability to influence and advise senior leadership

Experience with digital workplace tools and platforms

Desirable:

Knowledge of financial services or impact investing sector
Strategic thinking with ability to translate complex organisational objectives into clear communications plans
Exceptional writing skills with ability to adapt tone and style for diverse audiences from Board to all-staff
Strong project management skills with proven ability to deliver multiple workstreams simultaneously
Data-driven approach with experience using metrics to measure communications effectiveness
Resilient and adaptable, comfortable working in ambiguous environments with competing priorities
Collaborative approach with ability to work effectively across teams and departments
Strong emotional intelligence and ability to navigate sensitive organisational dynamics
