Job Title: Head of Management Accounting and Reporting

Salary: £90,000–£100,000 per annum


For internal candidates, starting salary will be determined in line with the organisation’s pay and grading policies and subject to formal negotiation upon appointment. In some cases, a market supplement may be considered, subject to business need and approval in accordance with internal policy.

About the Role:

The Head of Management Accounting and Reporting will play a central role in leading the management accounting and financial reporting function for the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). You will ensure the delivery of robust, timely, and transparent financial performance reporting, enabling strategic and operational decision-making across all business areas. This role offers the opportunity to have a significant impact on how financial information is used to drive value and improve service delivery across one of the largest police forces in the UK.


Reporting to the Director of Financial Management, you will be responsible for overseeing the financial performance reporting function and ensuring the alignment of financial practices with the MPS’s strategic objectives. You will work closely with senior stakeholders to present clear, actionable financial narratives and support long-term financial planning.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Management Accounting and Reporting function, ensuring timely, accurate, and transparent financial information to support executive decision-making.
  • Develop and present financial performance updates to the Executive Committee (ExCo) and Management Board, providing actionable insights on trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Strategic Finance and Finance Business Partners to align financial reporting with organisational priorities and statutory responsibilities.
  • Oversee the monthly reporting cycles and ad hoc commissions, ensuring outputs meet senior leaders' needs and reflect the full financial position of the MPS.
  • Lead and develop the Management Accounting and Reporting team, driving continuous improvement and fostering a high-performance culture.
  • Best in practise on visualisation through financial reporting.

The Ideal Candidate:


You will be a fully qualified accountant (e.g., CCAB, CIMA, or equivalent) with a strong background in financial reporting and management accounting. You will bring experience in leading financial teams, ensuring consistent delivery of financial performance insights and reports. Your communication skills will be exceptional, with the ability to present financial matters clearly to senior non-financial audiences. You will have experience in managing complex financial reporting processes and be able to drive continuous improvement and standardisation across financial practices.


Additional skills and experience required:

  • Extensive experience in financial planning, management accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex financial data and present clear, actionable insights to senior leaders.
  • Strong leadership skills, with experience in managing and developing a high-performing finance team.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement, particularly with senior management and external partners.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and manage high-volume, time-sensitive deliverables.
  • A track record of driving continuous improvement in financial processes and reporting practices.
