In regards to the location of the role, you will initially be based at the Teddington site. However, the Company is planning to permanently relocate its National Laboratories, Teddington operations to The Priestley Centre, Surrey Research Park, Guildford around Autumn 2024. Job Purpose
At the UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML) for chemical and bio-measurements, we deliver world leading measurement science to solve sophisticated global challenges. This is your opportunity to join a team that is dedicated to excellence and innovation.
Lead Reference Material production, ensure ISO 17034 compliance, certify materials, and lead a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Planning, management and coordination of the production of replacement and new reference materials within the NML
- Collaborating closely with distributors to ensure detailed distribution processes
- Collaborating with internal analytical teams to resolve and meet production needs
- Maintaining and extending ISO 17034 accreditation standards
- Providing a Reference Materials maintenance programme to ensure high standards
- Identifying and implementing improved RM production procedures
- Ensuring LGC maintains an effective service for answering customer enquiries professionally
- Preparing and reviewing certification reports for accuracy and compliance
- Coordinating the preparation and review of certificates and statements of measurement for release
- Providing technical review and approval of reference material production plans and certification studies, including chairing planning and certification meetings
- Signing certificates and statements of measurement for LGC produced reference materials and amendments to ERM certificates of analysis
- Representing the NML at LGC in national and international Reference Material activities and Committees
- Formulating and delivering the Reference Material components of appropriate government contracts, e.g. NMS Chemical & Biochemical Metrology programme
- Coordinating and submitting Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs) for the National Measurement Laboratory

Knowledge, Experience And Technical Skills
- Demonstrable experience and understanding of Reference Material production workflows in compliance with ISO 17034
- Strong metrology background with regards to method validation, traceability for measurements, and measurement uncertainty (highly desirable)
- Awareness of UK NMS and NML strategy and company goals
- Proven networking experience to cultivate beneficial industry connections
- Passionate individual eager to improve their skills and contribute to the development and delivery of the ORM team’s portfolio
- Self-reliant and self-motivated standout colleague
- Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills, both oral and written
- Appreciation of the importance of working within a quality system and knowledge of good laboratory practice
- Ability to deliver tasks within timescale and budget
- Methodical approach to delivery with outstanding attention to detail
- Ability to lead and motivate team members to maintain an effective team
Candidate Specification
Ideally, the successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent experience with an interest in and experience in the production of Reference Materials according to ISO 17034. Your expertise and leadership will be crucial in maintaining our world-class standards and competing on a global scale.
