Job Overview

We are expanding our team of Clinical Healthcare Support Workers within our Cardiology Daycase Unit (CDCU) and we’re inviting caring, compassionate people who are happy to work as part of a large and inclusive team to join us.

If you're kind, caring and passionate about making a positive difference to others, this role could be for you. Our Clinical Health Care Support Workers are integral to our nursing team.

You will be a core member of the team delivering personal care to patients within CDCU. This is a Nurse led Unit open between the hours of 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday caring for a wide range of patients admitted for planned Cardiology Procedures. This ranges from a diagnostic angiogram to a Cardioversion to insertion of a complex device (ie Pacemaker). Every day is different and varied.

Many of our Clinical Healthcare Support Workers have progressed to become registered Nurses via the apprenticeship route, with full support from our nursing and education teams.

We prefer previous healthcare experience in this role, but can support your training needs. If you are new to the Royal United Hospital Bath you will start on our induction programme to help you settle in and you will learn the skills you need to do this role and we will start you working towards achieving the Care Certificate (if you do not already hold this qualification).

Main duties of the job

Successful candidate must be competent in completing vital signs,NEWS scores, venepuncture, cannulation and 12 lead ECG.

Preparing and recovering patients who had cardiac procedures under trained nurses supervision.

Must have excellent organisational and communication skills and will be integral the success of daily elective activities.

About The Role

Our Clinical Healthcare Support Workers are integral to our nursing teams. It takes flexibility, commitment and compassion, but in return we can offer you a rewarding career where you can really make a difference.

You'll work under the guidance of a healthcare professional such as a nurse and your job will vary depending on the ward or department you are working in.

We provide all the training you need before you start working on one of our wards.

You will start on our healthcare support worker induction programme to learn the skills you need to be confident and competent to do this role, and we will start you working towards achieving the Care Certificate, if you do not already hold this qualification.

What you can expect to be doing in this role:

You will be a core member of the team delivering personal care, both clinical and non-clinical, to patients. You’ll also be key in supporting patients with their own self-care and independence.

You will be supporting registered nurses to deliver high quality, compassionate health care to people in accordance with assessed needs and a care plan.

This Is a Busy Role So You Will Be Working Together With Your Team To Balance Different Tasks That Often Change. Your Daily Duties Will Be Varied To Include:

  • blood pressure monitoring
  • oxygen saturation levels
  • body temperature
  • pulse rate and respiration rate
  • glucose monitoring,
  • collection and testing of urine, faecal and sputum samples
  • wound swabs
  • removal of catheters
  • venepuncture
  • recording your actions accurately in patient notes

Working as part of a team and on your own, you will draw from your knowledge, skills and experience.

Adapting how you communicate to meet the needs of patients, relatives, carers as well as colleagues with kindness and compassion is fundamental to how we work together. You will take care in handling patient and Trust property and may need to order supplies and restock.

You will help to support, train and welcome new colleagues, students and others to your area of work.

There will be opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills, specific to your needs and area of work. You will also be supported to obtain your care certificate if you do not already have this.

Qualifications And Training

You will have either: A Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Level 3. This could be an NVQ, BTEC or equivalent international qualification in healthcare. Or You will be able to demonstrate the equivalent level of experience. Desirable: You may also have previous experience in healthcare and have your Care Certificate if not, we will support you to achieve this qualification within the first three months of joining us.

Knowledge and experience

You’ll need to be able to understand and communicate both verbally and in writing in English. You don’t need any formal qualifications in maths but you will need to have numerical and analytic skills to do patient observations. You’ll need to understand what these mean as you’ll be documenting the results in patient notes and communicating to your team. You’ll have experience working in a public-facing/customer care role or environment. You can work in a team environment. You will need to have a customer-focused approach which is essential to:

  • Providing patients with the best possible experience
  • Working together with colleagues and other teams across the Trust. You will need to be able to use IT systems and databases. You will have the skill to focus on the details with the ability to spot problems. You will know when you are able to correct or when to escalate. You’ll need to be adaptable in work as things change as part of working in a wider team.

You will need to have hand and eye coordination to use your clinical skills for example: venepuncture.

Desirable: You’ll have experience working in a health and social care role and NHS experience, understanding of NHS/social care systems.

Working in an hospital environment.

The role is physically demanding and can include standing for long periods of time. You will move and handle patients, equipment and other physical health care tasks. Due to the nature of the role, you will have frequent exposure to foul linen, fluids from the body and clinical waste. You will be supplied with appropriate protective equipment such as gloves. Tact and sensitivity will be essential in this role. There will be times when you see distressing situations which may include vulnerable, violent or aggressive patients. You may also care for patients at their end of life and support grieving relatives. You will be part of a team dealing with these situations and not alone.
