About The Role
Our Balfour Beatty Highways business has a fantastic opportunity for a Health,
Safety & Wellbeing Advisor to join our team on the Highways A57 Link Road
scheme.
This role will be based at Mottram in Longdendale, Manchester.
Balfour Beatty Highways build, maintain, manage, and operate major highway
networks across the UK and support local authorities to create communities where
people want to live, work, and play. We put our customers first and prioritise
completing schemes safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
The purpose of this role is to assist in the development, implementation and
monitoring of processes to manage health, safety, & wellbeing risks on the Project.
The role will support the organisation’s ambition to be a safe and responsible
company regarding our people, supply chain partners, and the communities we
serve.
What you'll be doing
- Being a visible champion for HSW throughout the project engaging with employees and subcontractors at all management levels
- Monitor the delivery of the communications strategy to keep HSW on the operational delivery agenda, and report back to the HSW Lead on the levels of effective communication
- To support the delivery of appropriate and adequate HSW training based on Project needs
- Monitor and manage closeout of close calls.
- Challenge unsafe working practices
- Support/ undertake targeted inspections of HSW management system and supply chain audits, tracking & supporting actions to close out
- Managing own diary and stakeholder communications to plan, schedule, and conduct inspections and HSW conversations with site teams
- To prepare and communicate timely reports and presentations detailing performance data on inspection/close call findings, tracking and supporting actions to close out.
- To positively represent the Health, Safety & Wellbeing function and its strategy during conference calls and meetings
- To review work activities against safe systems of work, taking appropriate action and providing documented advice where necessary
- Lead or provide support during incident investigations, ensuring remedial actions are tracked to close out and learning is shared.
- Mentoring graduates/apprentices to build their HSW knowledge and confidence as they progress in their careers.
Working Arrangements
This is a site-based role with the requirement to be working outdoors daily. There
may also be occasional evening and weekend working.
Who we're looking for
- Essential: Professional qualification in health and safety (minimum NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent)
- Holds a current driving license and CSCS Card.
- Experience in a health and safety role, preferably in highway/major projects or construction;
- A passion for wellbeing, recognising that when people are truly cared for, they thrive—and so do the high-performing teams they’re part of
- Sound technical Health and Safety knowledge
- Understanding of HSE Management Systems;
- An ability to undertake causational analysis of accidents and incidents;
- Ability to work independently and in Department and project teams;
- Good written and verbal communication skills;
- Good presentation skills;
- Understanding of the management and motivation of staff to ensure that they behave in a safe and responsible manner;
- Experience with the delivery of training at all levels of the staff structure;
- Good team working skills.
- Utilise suite of Microsoft Office applications and digital platforms at an intermediate level to review data, identify themes and prepare representative graphs
Desirable
- Prior experience facilitating meetings via digital platforms e.g. Teams, Zoom, Skype etc
- Previous experience of mentoring and/or managing people
