Main duties of the job

The Home Oxygen Specialist Nurse works as part of the Respiratory Centre team , providing clinical expertise for the home oxygen service. This work includes assessing and evaluating patients with respiratory disease for domiciliary home oxygen and is conducted in ward inpatient settings , community clinics, and patients own homes.

  • The Nurse will work with all associated services that could be used to encourage improvements in the patients’ condition e.g. Healthy Living
  • Promote effective cross boundary working within the acute setting and with Primary care trusts and independent services to maintain the delivery of seamless quality care.
  • Develop and lead nurse run oxygen review clinics based in UHS and community ,completing relevant oxygen prescription and nursing documentation
  • Work in close professional partnership with other health professionals, reviewing patients holistically to prevent the duplication of nursing and AHP work.
  • Demonstrate clinical expertise, acting as a role model within the clinical speciality and contribute effectively to inter-professional working and supervision and development of junior grades
  • Become a skilled member of the Respiratory Department, providing the highest standard of evidenced based patient care

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Would you like to work in a progressive team of specialist respiratory nurses? We have a fantastic opportunity for someone to work as a full time Band 6 in our commissioned Oxygen service.

This is ideal for someone who would like to further their specialist nursing knowledge and skills within this supportive environment

We work from the Respiratory Centre in UHS . Our hours are Monday to Friday 08:00-18:00 with scope to extend for weekend clinic cover

The Home oxygen service provides specialist, evidenced based care and support for patients with respiratory disease within the acute hospital clinics and home environment.

The post holder will ideally have experience of supporting patients with chronic disease within primary or secondary care. They will need to liaise with local commissioners fulfilling key performance indicators for the Home oxygen service.

The CNS will educate and promote independence so patients manage their condition within primary care.

We are looking for someone with 3 years broad range post registration experience which includes medicine/elderly care and 12 months within respiratory or associated speciality.

Someone who is committed to continuing professional development who can communicate well in both written and spoken English. They must have excellent interpersonal skills, able to prioritise and deliver agreed objectives and be IT competent.

You will need a full clean driving license as some of the patient reviews will be in the community clinics and patient homes. This will involve moving some equipment from car to clinic / patient home.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

  • Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC register
  • Degree qualification or equivalent 120 credits at L6
  • Post registration qualification within area of speciality or equivalent experience
  • Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies
  • Provide evidence of supporting/ managing a range of learners in practice
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Extensive post registration experience within specialist area.
  • Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service.
  • Understanding of personal accountability.
  • Confident of own knowledge base, aware of learning needs and seeks guidance when appropriate.
  • Able to critically review and communicate clinical information.

  • Registered on MSc Pathway – completion of HTPA Competencies
  • Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
  • Counselling qualification
