HPC Research Software Engineer

Duration: Initially until 19.12.2025 with option to extend

Location: Cambridge (Hybrid, 3 Days On-site)

Assignment workload: Full time

BGC: will be completed prior to assignment

Setup: Freelance (Daily rate / Limited Company / Umbrella / Sole Trader)

Join a cutting-edge research environment where your expertise in high performance computing (HPC) and research software engineering will directly support scientific discovery. You’ll collaborate with researchers to develop, optimise, and maintain robust software solutions, ensuring performance, scalability, and reproducibility.

You’ll apply your skills in Python, C/C++, R, Java, or Go, alongside parallel computing frameworks like MPI and CUDA, to enhance scientific workflows. Your role will involve debugging complex applications, promoting best practices in software engineering (e.g. version control, documentation, unit testing), and delivering technical training to upskill the research community.

Key responsibilities include:

• Supporting and optimising scientific software and HPC workflows.
• Promoting software sustainability and reproducibility.
• Delivering hands-on training and coaching.
• Contributing to internal knowledge sharing and community building.

Essential Skills:

• Proven experience in research software development.
• Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.

Desirable:

• Experience with workflow engines (e.g. Nextflow), DevOps, AWS, SLURM, and infrastructure as code (e.g. Ansible, Terraform).
• Background in scientific domains such as deep learning, molecular dynamics, or omics.
• Familiarity with GxP environments and ITIL.

This is a hybrid role based in Cambridge, requiring on-site presence three days per week.
