Overall Purpose of The Job
- To provide specialist knowledge to the Company concerning the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems and associated equipment, and to advise on technical developments and their application within the marine industry.
Key Responsibilities And Tasks - To establish safe and technically correct procedures for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all HVAC systems and associated mechanical equipment on vessels throughout the fleet.
- To ensure that HVAC equipment is operated and maintained in accordance with approved procedures, manufacturer specifications, and regulatory requirements.
- To ensure that relevant records concerning the operation, servicing, and maintenance of HVAC systems are maintained as part of the fleet’s technical documentation
- To visit vessels, if so requested, to inspect HVAC installations and equipment to ensure compliance with approved standards, procedures, and industry best practices
- To advise the Technical Director, Fleet Managers, and Fleet Superintendents on appropriate levels of spares, refrigerants, filters, and other consumables required for HVAC system reliability and performance
- To advise the Technical Director of any changes in international and local regulations concerning HVAC, ventilation, and air quality standards, and of any modifications or updates needed to ensure ongoing compliance
- To act as a technical advisor for major HVAC overhauls, upgrades, or repairs, including during dry docking. Newbuild projects or refits, as requested by the Technical Director
- To ensure that maintenance of HVAC systems and associated mechanical equipment is carried out in accordance with safe, technically correct procedures and industry best practices
- To advise Fleet Managers and Superintendents of HVAC-related repairs and upgrades that should be included in drydock specifications, newbuild planning, regular maintenance and long-term maintenance strategies
- To advise Fleet Managers and Superintendents on appropriate actions in the event of a serious HVAC system failure or incident, and, if required, to attend the vessel to provide on-site technical expertise and support
- To evaluate and report on the technical competence of onboard HVAC technicians or personnel responsible for HVAC systems, based on observations during vessel visits and maintenance activities
- To advise Fleet Managers and Fleet Superintendents on cost estimates for repairs and maintenance of HVAC systems and associated equipment
- To provide technical advice concerning the purchase or repair of HVAC equipment and systems where significant expenditure is involved, ensuring cost-effectiveness, energy efficiency and long-term suitability
- To support the implementation of energy-efficient HVAC technologies and practices, ensuring alignment with environmental goals and regulatory requirements
- To provide information as necessary to assist in the preparation of claims
- Authority to develop operating procedures for implementing approved policies, and to monitor that such procedures are properly followed
- Liaises closely with: Fleet Managers, Fleet Superintendents, HSSEQ Superintendents, Group Purchasing Service
- Maintains contacts with:
- Regulatory Authorities
- Sources of information concerning technical developments

Essential
- Recognised qualification as a Marine Engineer, HVAC Engineer, or Electrician with relevant HVAC system experience
- Good command of the English language, written and spoken
- Good communication (oral and written) skills
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and interact with people at all levels
- Good planning and organisational skills
- An ability to develop creative and effective solutions to problems
Desirable
- Previous experience in a Senior HVAC/Engineering position within the Marine Industry
- Experience working on HVAC systems during vessel newbuild projects, including specification review, design input, and commissioning
- Understanding of energy-efficient HVAC system design, technologies, and operational strategies, particularly in line with evolving marine and environmental standards
- Familiarity with IMO, MARPOL, and other international environmental regulations related to HVAC and energy efficiency
- Involvement in the evaluation or implementation of energy-saving initiatives within a marine engineering or technical environment
