Information Governance Officer

Allen Lane are proud to be supporting the London Borough of Newham in their search to appoint an Information Governance Officer on a permanent basis. This is a fantastic opportunity to join the borough’s growing DDaT (Digital, Data and Technology) service and play a pivotal role in safeguarding the Council’s information assets and ensuring compliance in a fast-paced digital environment. This role sits in the Delivery and Oversight tower that ensures the effective integration of delivery, risk management and strategic governance across the whole DDaT Function. If the ‘A’ in DDaT could be its own definition it would be ‘Assurance’. Delivery and Oversight is crucial to help create and drive a culture in DDaT of performance, innovation and continuous improvement and inspire new ways of working for the rest of the Council.

The role

As the Information Governance Officer, you will:

• Support the delivery of high-quality information governance across the organisation
• Provide expert advice on data protection, compliance, access to information and information sharing
• Monitor information risks, review DPIAs, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and Council policies
• Support the development of records management, information security, and assurance frameworks
• Collaborate across teams to embed good data governance practices and enable digital transformation
• Contribute to wider DDaT and Council strategies that place security, transparency and service excellence at the centre

Key skills required

As an Information Governance Officer, you will bring:

• An understanding of information governance legislation, including GDPR and FOI
• Experience in completing information risk management and data protection impact assessments
• The ability to advise stakeholders and influence best practice in data handling and security
• Strong analytical skills and a methodical approach to documentation and compliance
• Confidence working across services and advising on systems, policies, and data architecture
• A values-led mindset with a focus on integrity, accountability and service improvement
• Strong customer service and communication skills
