Instrumental Teacher Positions – Centre for Music Performance, University of Cambridge

Piano/ Flute/ Singing/ Violin/ Electric & Bass Guitar Teacher – Beginner Lessons Programme

Cambridge University's Centre for Music Performance (CMP) is seeking freelance piano, flute, singing, violin and electric/bass guitar teachers to deliver an expanded programme of instrumental tuition for students across all subjects and colleges, including some with no prior experience of instrumental music lessons. These lessons will begin in October 2025, in time for the start of the academic year.

About the Programme

The CMP is dedicated to enabling students of all subjects, backgrounds and levels of musical ability to make music a core part of life at Cambridge. While many students arrive at Cambridge with a high level of musical experience, others have had only limited access to musical opportunities, including instrument lessons at school. We want to address this by providing subsidised lessons for a range of students, including those who have never had the opportunity to learn an instrument before.

This co-curricular programme builds on our successful guitar pilot scheme, which launched in 2023, and represents an expansion of what we hope will become an increasingly significant element of music provision at Cambridge. The CMP will select participants based on criteria which determine who will benefit most from receiving these lessons.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking outstanding teachers who are skilled at delivering instrumental lessons for young adults, including those who have had limited musical experience previously.

Our focus is on:

  • Individual 1:1 lesson as the main teaching format
  • Potential for small group lessons for beginners if teacher is interested
  • Supportive, encouraging teaching approach for adult beginners.

Programme Structure & Logistics

We are open to the content and structure of the lessons being determined by the teacher.

  • Lessons will be delivered during Cambridge termtime only, avoiding the exam period – broadly, between early October and early December, mid-January and mid-March, and late April to mid-May.
  • During these periods we will offer fortnightly, 45-minute instrumental lessons for participants – with two cohorts of students coming for lessons on alternating weeks.
  • The specific day of the week for delivering lessons will be based on both teacher and room availability.
  • Students will be loaned instruments by the CMP if required for lessons and practice • Venues: Partner college locations across Cambridge.
  • Teacher to keep the CMP updated on individual student progress (both in a musical and wellbeing context) via a brief report at the end of each term.

Compensation

  • £51 per hour teaching rate
  • Regular weekly sessions across three terms in an academic year
  • Potential opportunity for ongoing work with successive cohorts
