Intermediate BMS Optimisation Engineer


The Opportunity

As a result of continued company growth, we are looking for an intermediate BMS optimisation engineer to join the Energy Optimisation team within our solutions department.


Our Solutions department are responsible for creating and implementing cost-effective, low-carbon energy solutions to our public and private sector customers across the UK. As a member of the Energy Optimisation team, you will contribute to the design, delivery, and verification of our BMS energy conservation initiatives. You will also provide BMS support to our wider low-carbon energy solutions and the project delivery teams.


Projects you will be involved in will include the optimisation of existing BMS control strategies, the partial and full upgrade of obsolete BMS controls and associated network infrastructure, and the integration, control, and monitoring of low carbon solutions such as Solar PV, heat pumps, and hydronic system optimisation.


Our established Energy Optimisation team are responsible for over £20m of BMS energy conservation initiatives on over £260m of performance contracts over the past 6 years. If you are a BMS engineer with a passion and interest in supporting the drive to Net Zero, this is the ideal role for you!


This is a hybrid role that offers a balance of home-based working with travel to project sites in England, Scotland, and Wales, and travel to our London, Blackburn, and/or Glasgow offices. It is not a site-based role and there is no expectation for full-time work away from home.


The Role

As an intermediate BMS optimisation engineer you will work closely with the optimisation team on all aspects of our BMS energy savings initiatives and will be given the opportunity to contribute to the design, implementation, and verification of those initiatives. Our experienced team will provide training and hands-on-support to help grow your skills, ensuring you gain the technical and practical knowledge needed to develop your career.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Carry out detailed surveys of BMS and controlled HVAC equipment to support the identification BMS and HVAC energy conservation initiatives
  • Assess the baseline performance of BMS control strategies through the interrogation of strategy drawings, O&M documentation, and observed operating conditions.
  • Identify and collect existing BMS logs, or setup new logging as applicable, to support the modelling of potential BMS and HVAC energy savings initiatives.
  • Work closely with our BMS sub-contractor supply chain to design and cost BMS energy savings initiatives for EPC tenders, high-level assessment, and investment grade proposals.
  • Work closely with BMS sub-contractor supply chain to create, review, and seek client approval of BMS reviewable design data such as control’s philosophy, risk assessment, method statement, and impact assessment.
  • Work closely with our project delivery teams to ensure BMS initiatives are delivered to the agreed design specifications within timeframe and budget.
  • Support the commissioning, witness testing, and handover of delivered BMS energy savings initiatives.
  • Support the measurement and verification of guaranteed energy savings.


The Person

The ideal candidate will be a motivated and reliable individual with a foundational understanding of BMS and common HVAC control strategies. They should have some experience working alongside BMS sub-contractors and project delivery teams, supporting the successful delivery of projects to specification, budget, and schedule. This role offers training and ongoing support from senior team members to help further develop your skills and confidence in BMS optimisation and project coordination.

Experience of energy savings initiatives would be advantageous but is not essential.


Skills/Experience

  • A basic understanding of common BMS and HVAC control strategies and their operation, with a willingness to continue learning through hands-on experience and team support.
  • Some experience supporting the delivery of BMS projects in collaboration with BMS sub-contractors and wider project teams.
  • Familiarity with integrating HVAC plant into BMS systems along with a working knowledge, or eagerness to develop knowledge, of common high-level communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and M-Bus.
  • Exposure to, or an interest in developing skills, working with customer IT teams to support infrastructure upgrades and assist in the transition from proprietary BMS networks to modern Ethernet-based systems.

  • Flexible approach to managing workload with the ability to work to deadlines.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft software packages including, Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Full UK driving licence.
