Intern - Research Analyst

We’re looking for a proactive, independent thinker to join our team as an analyst Intern, for a 6-12 month basis (depending on availability). You will work on a range of assignments primarily supporting evaluation and research services across the range of thematic areas above, including providing analytical, research and administrative support across Agulhas’ portfolio of projects, bids, communications and internal projects.

A work plan with outcomes and achievements for the duration of the Internship will be jointly curated with you and your manager, based on your interests and the needs of the Organisation, giving you the opportunity to learn how the sector works. You will also be allocated an analyst ‘buddy’ to help you navigate life at Agulhas.

The start date for this internship is flexible to start between August-September based on the needs of the candidate and the Organisation. The internship will pay at least London Living Wage (salary dependent on experience), with the potential to be promoted to a full-time analyst position at the end of the internship. The main place of work will be our London office (N1, alongside Regent’s Canal), with a 40% in-office hybrid working policy (60% during probation). Applicants must have the existing right to work in the UK for the full duration of the internship. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

Personal qualities

• At least a Masters-level degree in a relevant subject, such as climate/environment, international development, political science or economics (‘Grade pending’ is acceptable)
• A broad understanding of current issues, key concepts, practices and debates in international development, conflict and crisis contexts, climate change and/or adjacent sectors based on your educational and extracurricular experiences
• Well-developed research and critical thinking skills
• Excellent communication skills, both in writing and verbally, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly and succinctly, defending your arguments with evidence
• A proactive and enthusiastic approach to work, with the ability to take on a wide variety of tasks with a “can-do” attitude. You will be keen to learn and willing to turn your hand to new and familiar tasks and will be an excellent team player
• The maturity and professionalism to interact with colleagues, clients and partners under the direction of Agulhas Managers and Directors
• A high level of skill in technical written work and excellent attention to detail
• Exceptional time management and organisation, with the ability to work on multiple tasks in parallel

Research Intern Qualities

• A lively interest in global issues and policy debates, particularly in climate, conflict & crisis or economic development
• An ability to take clear, accurate and succinct notes from project meetings and research interviews, including ability to take verbatim notes when required
• An organised and thorough approach to supporting projects and ability to work to instruction, for example by helping to set up meetings, roundtable and focus group discussions, setting up relevant libraries of resources on specific topics, conducting analysis, working on drafts in collaboration with others, conducting business development activities etc
• Familiarity with a range of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, with a talent for collecting and analysing data from a wide range of sources, including interpreting statistics, presenting quantitative and qualitative analyses and summarising documents
• An understanding of basic monitoring and evaluation concepts relevant to global development
• Good competency in using a variety of standard computer and cloud-based software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite), as well as social media.
• You will be familiar with AI research tools and understand the benefits and risks associated with their use and be able to engage in assignments without the use of AI when required to do so.
• An ability to work innovatively, showing a flexible, adaptive mind-set to changing needs
• An ability to deliver quality work to a tight timeline within a team and independently.

Other expectations and qualifications:

• You must have the right to work in the UK for the full duration of the internship
• A period of time working (paid or volunteering) internationally in the global development or humanitarian sector is desirable
• Experience on graphic design packages such as In-Design is desirable
• Knowledge or experience of foundations, civil society organisations or NGOs is highly desirable
• Working knowledge of another language e.g. Arabic, French, Spanish or Portuguese is highly desirable.
