About HALO

HALO’s mission is to protect lives and restore the livelihoods of those affected by conflict. It does this by clearing landmines, disposing of explosive ordnance, and supporting partners to safely manage weapons and ammunition.

For over 35 years The HALO Trust has been saving lives and helping conflict affected countries recover from conflict, by making their land safe. When conflict ends, land is often littered with landmines and other dangerous explosives. Families live in fear and poverty. They are unable to plant crops or graze cattle and day-to-day activities like getting to school and fetching water are fraught with risk. HALO recruits and trains men and women to clear landmines in their own communities, take back control of their own livelihoods and rebuild their communities.

HALO is now one of the leading humanitarian mine clearance organisations globally, with programmes in 32 countries and territories with over 10,000 staff, most of whom are local employees.

About The Role

When you become a Field Officer in HALO you join a team with a shared commitment to making life safer and more secure for vulnerable communities across the world. HALO provides extensive technical and management training for the role of Field Officer, and you do not require previous knowledge of landmine clearance or ordnance disposal.

HALO wants people that are adaptable, resilient, and mature, with strong intellectual curiosity and initiative. We are looking for leaders who can perform and inspire others in austere conditions.

HALO Field Officers work across our programmes in various roles and with early line management responsibilities. You need aptitude and fortitude to function in dynamic and challenging environments, and you should have demonstrable management and leadership qualities.

HALO’s training will prepare you for deployment to any country programmes where you could be leading hundreds of local employees. On the Field Officer course you will receive technical training in mine clearance, explosive ordnance disposal and minefield survey. You will learn to use HALO’s finance, logistics, security, HR, IT, and quality management systems. Once deployed to a programme, in addition to operational field work you will be involved in data analysis, risk assessment, equipment auditing and maintenance, overseeing the repair of vehicles and writing reports and proposals.

Working for HALO is highly rewarding, but it’s also physically and mentally demanding. Living and working in remote locations in basic conditions is not for everyone, and you can expect to be away from home for approximately 45 weeks per year. HALO Field Officers must be willing to be posted to any of HALO's programmes upon successful completion of the course. Research our programmes at www.halotrust.org

You will live and work alongside people from a range of backgrounds and cultures. You will need excellent interpersonal and soft skills to develop effective working relationships with people that understand and interpret the world differently than you.

The six-and-a-half-month Field Officer course has been awarded 120 credit points at Level 9 of the Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework. For those that succeed, further professional training and development opportunities will stimulate and support career progression.

Working for HALO is a unique opportunity, but it can be tough. However, if you genuinely want to make a difference to people's lives it could be the job for you.
