THE ROLE
The National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF) is the UK Government’s corporate venturing arm for pioneering dual-use technologies. Its mission is to ensure the UK national security and defence (NS&D) community can access and adopt the most innovative technology from the market at pace and scale, delivering strategic advantage to the UK as well as protecting the UK's security and prosperity. NSSIF’s investments are overseen by the Department of Science Innovation and Technology (DSIT) supporting NSSIF to deliver for UK National Security and prosperity.
In this role you will drive long-term national security impact, by shaping and delivering NSSIF’s investment strategy, leading NSSIF’s investment activities, including direct and fund-of-funds investments, technology scouting, market ecosystem development and scaling the fund from deploying £20m to deploying up to £100m per year.
NSSIF has been highly successful. It has delivered significant national security impact, with 41% of the portfolio R&D programmes resulting in adoption by Mission and recurring revenue and contracts for startups. NSSIF has created thousands of jobs across the UK, and successfully crowded in over £500m in private capital to support NS&D. Following the recent Spending Review, NSSIF will scale to invest a total of £330 million (of capital provided by DSIT) over the next four years.
Most of the investments are in early-stage with the remainder in growth stage startups, largely in the UK. NSSIF also invests overseas in countries with strong Mission alignment and in companies that offer standout capability to the UK. Given the National Security imperative, you will be responsible for growing NSSIF’s investment capabilities and team to deliver 10s of investments a year, deploying this increased allocation of capital.
The broader NSSIF team comes from NS&D, DSIT and the British Business Bank (BBB). All share a strong commitment to Mission and to delivering impact for NS&D. NSSIF’s investment, R&D and insight activities are delivered through four technology themes, in response to Mission customers’ capability demands: Quantum, Semiconductors & Advanced Compute; Space, Satellites & Future Communications; AI and Data; and Emerging Technologies, including engineering biology.
With experience of leading venture capital and corporate finance activities, including direct investment and fund activities, and of working in a flexible cross-team environment and maintaining clear communications with all parties, you will also be able to demonstrate experience in developing and managing relationships across a diverse range of senior external partners and stakeholders. Experience of working in a high-profile representational role is also essential as is an understanding of national security and defence
