Main duties of the job
- We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our busy tertiary level Neonatal Intensive Care team
- You must have a minimum of 2 years clinical experience post medical school graduation
- We are looking for applicants with a minimum of 6 months clinical experience working in the UK. Prior experience working in a tertiary neonatal unit (NICU), to include the management of extremely preterm infants, is desirable.
- The appointment will be for 12 months in the first instance and is potentially renewable depending on both parties agreeing.
At any one time there are 8-10 WTE ST1-8 paediatric/neonatal deanery trainees based on the unit. In addition, there are several Clinical Fellows, Research Fellows, MTIs and ANNPs contributing to the SHO rota (15 WTE) and Registrar rota (16-17 WTE).
The current rota enables a Registrar/ANNP & ST1-3 for both Intensive Care, High Dependency and Special care and an allocated person for Transport. Paediatric cover is separate to this post

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Participating in the ST1-3 equivalent medical rota on the neonatal unit to include shifts on intensive care, high dependency, special care and transitional care/ postnatal ward.
- You will also hold the delivery suite bleep and attend high risk deliveries under supervision.
- Necessary procedural skills include venepuncture, peripheral cannulation, and lumbar puncture.
- Supervision and Education
- All Neonatal medical staff are allocated an Educational Supervisor who will be one of the Neonatal Consultants. A personal training plan will be developed at the beginning of the post to suit the individual’s training needs. Progress will be monitored by regular appraisal. It is expected that you will use the RCPCH syllabus and portfolio as a guide to their clinical training requirements.
- Other educational opportunities and meetings include: a weekly fetal medicine meeting, a weekly educational “grand round”, a weekly Journal Club meeting and a weekly neonatal surgical education meeting. There are also antenatal counselling opportunities and audit and morbidity/mortality meetings.
- The Thames Valley & Wessex Neonatal ODN holds a series of educational meetings.
- An extensive range of educational opportunities exist within the Perinatal service including Genetics, Fetal medicine, Fetal and Neonatal Cardiology and all paediatric subspecialist service
Study & Training
- All new employees receive a comprehensive trust induction programme.
- There is also a specific Neonatal Unit induction which covers aspects of basic neonatal care and resuscitation techniques.
- There is a comprehensive Medical Library available on the Southampton General Site, which forms part of a dynamic Postgraduate Medical Education Centre.
- A Clinical Skills training facility is available to all grades of Medical and Nursing Staff and there is a range of Neonatal and Paediatric manikins for procedure training. Within the Neonatal Unit there is a library of Neonatal texts stored in the shared doctor’s office. There is Internet access to facilitate literature searches and to access online Educational resources.
Clinical Governance & audit
- It is expected that you will partake in audit activity during your contract and be involved in the development and updating of the unit’s clinical guidelines.
- There are also opportunities to participate in monthly morbidity and mortality meetings and neonatal governance meetings.
Administration
- Administrative duties including generating admission and discharge summaries using the electronic notes system is expected.
On call duties
- You will take part in a full-shift pattern of working to cover the out of hours service. This includes long days (08:00-21:00), nights and weekends.
Additional Information
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.
Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
Basic Salary – MT03 £52,656
Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5;
- Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training
- Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS)
- A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.

Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Working towards completion of MRCPCH or equivalent
- At the time of starting the post, applicants should be a fully qualified doctor with a minimum of 2 years’ experience post-graduation.
- At least 6 months experience working in the NHS
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
Desirable criteria
- MSC/BSc (or other intercalated degree)
- Prior experience working in a tertiary level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
- Experience managing extremely preterm infants >22 weeks gestation
- NLS (& APLS) provider or equivalent
- Experience managing extremely preterm infants >22 weeks gestation
- Interest or experience in research
Aptitudes and skills
Essential criteria
- Competent IT skills and familiarity with NHS systems
- Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
