Meet the team behind this journey

DeepL's Legal department is seeking a Junior Legal Counsel to join our team focusing on AI regulation with impact on AI technology. You will work closely with your sub-team, the wider legal team and stakeholders from other departments to provide support across a range of legal matters within this evolving field of law. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative company as a technology lawyer, at the forefront of the language technology revolution.

Your Responsibilities

This role requires a commercially oriented individual with a strong interest in AI technology who is eager to learn, work closely with research, tech and product teams, and has the drive to tackle a wide range of tasks within this highly innovative field of law. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide comprehensive legal support on a wide range of daily matters within the field of AI regulation and governance, with a particular focus on emerging new legal frameworks such as the EU AI Act, but also copyright, IP, IT, competition laws with relation to AI technology
  • Work closely together with Lead and Senior Legal counsel and support them in the coordination and legal work of complex, cross-functional tech and product-related projects with internal and external stakeholders (i.e. product development, research, GtM)
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of risk frameworks, processes, and policies to ensure compliance with new AI regulation
  • Support in protecting the company's intellectual property rights relating to its AI technology, including model and product assessments, review of license terms, and license management
  • Support information initiatives for customers and educate employees on AI-related matters.
  • Independent research and horizon scanning on new laws and regulations that impact the company in the relevant areas (such as AI-specific regulation, product liability directives and digital regulation), including different jurisdictions (above all: EU, UK, US) and provide guidance on them.

Qualities we look for

  • You are a fully qualified lawyer within your jurisdiction (i.e. First and Second German State Exam or comparable qualification) with above-average results, or comparable qualification such as an LL.M. in the relevant field. First relevant work experience in a law firm or inhouse is desirable.
  • You have a strong interest in AI technology, particularly language-based solutions and you have basic knowledge of applicable AI regulations and guidelines in the EU. Knowledge of non-EU regulations is desirable.
  • You create a motivating and collaborative environment, where your colleagues set and achieve challenging developmental and business goals.
  • You're able to source relevant information and use it to enable teams requesting your support
  • You are willing to work in a highly demanding, fast changing and fast pace environment. You bring business-oriented thinking, strong analytical, research, and problem solving skills.
  • You are able to prioritise and organize your workload according to risks and company requirements in time-sensitive matters.
  • You are fluent in English
