Join Our OPUSS Team as a Band 6 Coordinator – Short Stay Elderly Care Ward
OPUSS Ward is a dynamic short-stay unit dedicated to the care of older people. We are looking for an
experienced, passionate, and forward-thinking Band 6 Nurse to take on a leadership role within our team.
As a
Band 6 Coordinator, you will be at the heart of patient flow and team leadership, ensuring safe, high-quality, and person-centred care for older adults with complex medical, cognitive, and social needs. You will lead by example, supporting and developing staff, coordinating care plans, and working closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver excellence in a fast-paced environment.
This role demands strong clinical expertise, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. You will play a key part in maintaining safe staffing levels, driving quality improvements, and ensuring that every patient experience reflects dignity, compassion, and respect.

Main duties of the job
- Lead and coordinate care delivery on a busy short-stay elderly ward.
- Ensure safe staffing levels and effective patient flow.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based care for older adults.
- Act as a role model, providing clinical leadership and mentorship to staff.
- Support discharge planning and liaise with multidisciplinary teams.
- Maintain high standards of documentation and compliance with NMC Code.
- Drive quality improvement initiatives and participate in audits.
- Promote a positive, compassionate, and patient-focused culture.

Qualifications And Training
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (NMC Pin) – Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
- Clinical Experience in Elderly Care – Proven experience in acute or short-stay elderly wards.
- Leadership & Coordination Skills – Ability to lead a team, allocate resources, and manage patient flow effectively.
Desirable criteria
- Mentorship/Preceptorship Qualification – Ability to support staff development.
- Experience with Discharge Planning – Knowledge of community pathways and reducing length of stay.
- Audit & Quality Improvement Experience – Familiarity with monitoring quality indicators and implementing improvements.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Excellent Communication Skills – Ability to liaise with multidisciplinary teams and families.
- Risk Management / Patient Safety Awareness & Safe Staffing – Demonstrated ability to identify and mitigate clinical risks. Understanding of safe staffing principles.
- Ability to Work Under Pressure – Skilled in prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – Courses or training relevant to elderly care or leadership.
- IT Skills – Competence in electronic patient record systems and rostering tools.
