Shaftesbury Education Local Advisory Board Co-opted Member.

Millie College LAB invites passionate professionals or community members with expertise in horticulture, conservation, and environmental stewardship to join us as a Co‑opted Member. Help us continue to transform our unique grounds into a sustainable and accessible learning space and bring your specialist insight to our strategic decisions.

Why Join?

  • Champion Green Initiatives: Guide practical projects—from wildlife gardens and pollinator corridors to composting and rainwater harvesting.
  • Enhance Learning Opportunities: Collaborate with teaching staff to integrate outdoor education, environmental science activities, and eco‑wellbeing programmes.
  • Shape Long‑Term Strategy: Work in partnership with the college leadership and land owners to advise on policies for biodiversity, habitat management, and climate resilience across the site.

What’s Involved?

  • Term & Meetings: Serve a four‑year term, attending a minimum of three full LAB meetings per academic year (one each term). Additional site visits or workshop sessions may be scheduled as needed.
  • Preparation & Input: Review meeting papers in advance, support the preparation of project proposals or provide briefings on environmental topics, and report on progress of green initiatives.
  • Working Group Participation: Sit on the Cultivate Working Group, contributing to termly action plans, budget recommendations, and support with environmental impact assessments, alongside joint visits to the college.
  • Governance Standards: Observe confidentiality, declare any conflicts of interest, and comply with our Code of Conduct and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion commitments.

Skills & Qualities We Value

  • Horticultural Expertise: Strong knowledge of plant selection, garden design, soil health, and sustainable landscaping.
  • Conservation & Ecology: Understanding of habitat creation, native species, wildlife management, and local conservation priorities.
  • Project Management: Experience overseeing multi‑year environmental projects, managing budgets, and coordinating volunteers or contractors.
  • Collaborative Mindset: Able to work in partnership with educators, facilities staff, students, and external organisations.
  • Passion for Education: Enthusiastic about involving young people in hands‑on conservation and environmental leadership activities.

  • Submit a Statement of Interest (max. 500 words) outlining your expertise, relevant projects, and vision for Millie College’s future sustainable and accessible college.

  • Selection Process: The existing LAB will review applications against our skills matrix and invite shortlisted candidates for an informal interview.
