Location: Bristol (minimum 3 days in the office)

The role:

The Instrumentation Group Lead will work in support to the Electrical Design Manager and the System and Electrical Discipline Manager.


The position is located in Bristol EPR-E head offices and may require business trips in France mainly with an expected frequency of 1-2 trips per quarter.


The Instrumentation Group Lead operationally reports to the Electrical Design Manager and functionally to the System, Electrical and I&C discipline manager. The team covers a broad range of electrical activities focused on .



Main Activities

The Instrumentation Group Leader is responsible for leading and managing a specialist team of Engineers, Contract and Technical engineering Leads within EPR-E.

They must ensure the accurate completion and verification of electrical engineering deliverables to be issued to the Customer (NNB) and other Disciplines in accordance with the technical requirements and following the overall project schedule. They must also manage when relevant the update of System Design Manuals in consistency with site and most recent supplier feedbacks.

Depending on their scope of activities and areas of expertise within the section as well as the phase of the project, they will oversee the following main engineering activities:

  • Management of the supplier contracts and/or monitoring of design and manufacturing of process sensors and specific instrumentation
  • Drive the preparation of related electrical design studies related to instrumentation such as compiling sensor needs in the plant and associated requirements
  • Follow up of instrumentation procurement contracts mainly focused on interface with cabling and connecting activities
  • Follow up / organisation / reporting on the progress of their team delivery scope
  • Interface with our front office to take into account site feedback impacting our studies


They will be required to develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders (Other engineering disciplines & project teams within EPR-E and Edvance France, EDF CNEPE, suppliers as well as our Client) ensuring that their expectations are met. They will need to influence key stake holders such as site teams and more widely the Licensee NNB.


They have responsibilities for Technical Leadership, Health and Safety, Work Planning, Succession Management, Quality Assurance, skill development on the job, and budgets. They may be asked to manage the performance of several Local Mother Companies staff and support their development.


They will be a role model and demonstrate the highest standards of focus on nuclear professionalism and safety.


They are responsible for the production of documents to be delivered to the Customer and technical support for the equipment contracts under the responsibility of the team.


They will be required to verify the quality of the documents in line with the technical, nuclear safety and environmental standards and requirements. They will also be required to provide the other disciplines in interface with input on potential risks and issues related to quality, workload, schedule, resources, planning, budgets etc. within their group.


Principal Accountabilities

  • Monitor team resources, processes, workload activities continually to ensure optimum performance,
  • Responsible for maintaining a suitable balance between workload, skills and resources to ensure deliverables are issued on time and with quality,
  • Manage progress against deliverables and project schedule, report any potential issues to the Process Department Manager and make recommendations,
  • Responsible for the technical quality and consistency of the team’s deliverables i.e. Verify and approve technical documents and deliverables before the Process Department Manager’s final approval,
  • Provide / ensure appropriated technical leadership guidance and expertise to the engineers and technicians,
  • Manage resources planning within budget and provide feedback to the Process Department Manager and Discipline Manager,
  • Lead, develop and implement the nuclear safety culture within the team,
  • Support the overall knowledge management of the System discipline by ensuring proper capitalisation of knowledge / Operational Experience,
  • Represent the Process Department Manager in their technical area of expertise as primary point of contact with Edvance France and Intelligent Customer.


Essential Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • Electrical or Electronic Engineering degree or equivalent qualification
  • Proven experience of electrical engineering or relevant experience supporting nuclear operating fleet
  • Relevant experience in team management
  • Relevant experience to effectively manage own and team’s workload in order to respect deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately, both written and orally, in English
  • Proactive and confident in communicating with others, particularly those based in remote offices including France, Germany.
  • Proactive in developing positive working relations with others within the project


Desirable Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • Knowledge in any of EPR system design sequences, I&C or Safety Classification sequences or relevant equivalent experience
  • Experience in the management of transverse technical and contractual topics
  • Ability to prioritise, to manage numerous interfaces, to question and understand the imperatives of other downstream disciplines
  • Knowledge of cable sizing, cabling tools
  • Knowledge of UK licensing requirements and its application within a nuclear project
