About The Role

Are you ready to lead a team that keeps our highways safe, efficient, and well-maintained? Balfour Beatty is looking for a proactive and experienced Lead Highway Steward to join our Network Management team in East Sussex. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real impact in your community while developing your leadership and operational skills.

What you'll be doing

  • Team Leadership: Manage and support a team of Highway Stewards, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of inspections and maintenance activities.
  • Safety Inspections: Conduct routine and reactive highway inspections, identify defects, assess risks, and raise work orders.
  • Customer Engagement: Handle enquiries and claims professionally, liaising with residents, councillors, and stakeholders.
  • Quality Assurance: Perform audits to ensure “right first time” standards and support process improvements.
  • Operational Support: Provide administrative and operational assistance to the Highway Stewards and Assurance Manager, including deputising when required.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Represent Balfour Beatty at meetings and forums, promoting a collaborative and professional image

Who we're looking for

Essential

  • Experience in highways inspections or operations
  • Line management experience
  • Strong knowledge of highways maintenance standards and policies
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Proven leadership and organisational abilities
  • Confident in stakeholder engagement, including elected members
  • Good IT skills and familiarity with works management systems
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Desirable

  • Performance management capabilities
  • Strong problem-solving and prioritisation skills
