Purpose of the Role
To undertake topographic and permanent way surveys on site, safely and to a high quality, whilst leading and coaching additional and/or less experienced members of the team.
Person Specification
- Rail experience and knowledge is desirable but not essential however, willingness to learn and master rail-specific measurement technologies and working methods are.
- Experienced and confident in land surveying techniques including (but not limited to) traversing, levelling, GNSS, total station topographic survey and the understanding of the limitations and best practice for each method employed.
- Knowledgeable in the use of Trimble total stations and associated GNSS equipment would be preferred but not essential as full training can be given.
- Comfortable working under short-duration time pressures due to limited access to the rail infrastructure.
- Be able to work with a high degree of autonomy and progress surveys under your own initiative, individually or as part of a small team.
- Be able to motivate those around you to achieve the same aims; be willing to teach more junior colleagues to aid with their career progression and increase their survey and railway knowledge. Full support and guidance will always be available as and when required.
- Due to working on the rail infrastructure, work will be carried out predominantly at night, including weekends (day and night).
- Most work will be in the Anglia Network Rail region, however, travel further afield including overnight stays may be required as and when the business needs dictate.
- Must hold a full and clean driving licence.
- The position will require obtaining and maintaining track safety competencies if not already held, including passing an industry medical.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Survey Manager and overall construction team as directed in the undertaking of complex site surveys.
- Be able to determine the most appropriate manner of survey in the planning and execution of surveys on site.
- Complete and deliver railway, gauging and land surveys to the survey brief and specification.
- Make sure the equipment assigned to you is kept in good condition and that all calibration dates are adhered to.
- Understand and translate RICS and Network Rail surveying standards into site practice.
- Carry out limited setting out activity in accordance with design drawings and scheme plans.
- Lead and coach more junior members of staff in all site surveys.
