Job Type: Permanent

Hybrid working model.
Location: Flexible (Remote, with options to work from offices in Reading and Leeds. You may be required to work part-time from client offices.)
Summary:
Mastek is seeking a Lead User-Centred Design (UCD) Consultant to shape and lead the delivery of impactful, user-focused services across both public and private sectors. This strategic, hands-on role blends consultancy, design leadership, and stakeholder engagement, while playing a key role in growing our UCD practice. As a trusted advisor and expert practitioner, you’ll help embed UCD thinking across teams and projects—driving better outcomes for users, clients, and the business.
Key responsibilities:
Strategic Collaboration and Business Development
- Collaborate with the Head of UCD and other leadership to contribute to business development and identify new opportunities for growth.
- Shape the development of business proposals and bids, applying UCD and agile approaches to ensure alignment with client needs.
- Identify and pursue new opportunities with existing and potential clients, helping to shape future projects and proposals.
Stakeholder Management
- Manage relationships with stakeholders at all levels, ensuring clear communication, alignment, and buy-in for project goals and UCD approaches.
- Act as a trusted advisor to client project teams and senior stakeholders, providing expert guidance on user-centred design methodologies and approaches.
- Upskill and educate clients and colleagues on UCD methods and agile delivery approaches to transformation.
Design Leadership
- Depending on the needs of the business and clients, you may lead part-time on live projects, providing hands-on leadership and expertise in UCD, ensuring high-quality design solutions that meet client and user needs.
- Guide the design process through all stages - from discovery and research to prototyping and implementation.
- Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to define project scope, success criteria, and deliverables.
- Lead multidisciplinary agile teams, embedding user-centred principles throughout the delivery lifecycle.
Support the Development of the UCD Practice
- Cultivate a thriving community of practice that encourages knowledge sharing, cross-functional collaboration, and a supportive, innovative design environment.
- Lead on recruitment of new team members
- Introduce and maintain career progression frameworks, mentorship, and training pathways to support continuous team development.
- Streamline and enhance knowledge management, design workflows, tools, and processes to ensure efficient delivery and a strong portfolio of high-quality design outcomes across all projects.
- Champion team well-being and culture, creating a positive and inclusive work environment.
Requirements:
Experience:
- Extensive experience in user-centred design, with the ability to lead projects and work within agile teams and complex programmes.
- Demonstrable experience in applying user-centred design methods and tools, including leading projects from discovery to live.
- Experience in consultancy, managing multidisciplinary teams, and working with diverse stakeholders.
- Coaching, mentoring, or management experience in UCD teams, with a strong focus on professional development, standards, and team leadership.
- Familiarity with GDS standards and assessments.
- Sector experience in the public sector or healthcare is a bonus.
Skills:
- Strong leadership and project management skills, with the ability to drive project delivery while managing complexity and ambiguity.
- Deep expertise in UCD and good knowledge of specific specialisms (Service Design, User Research, UX/UI Design, or Content Design).
- Strategic mindset with the ability to shape design direction and align UCD with broader business goals.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders and clients.
- Strong facilitation skills for both remote and in-person workshops, meetings, and research sessions.
- Ability to manage complex projects, navigate organizational dynamics, and resolve challenges effectively.
