Job Overview
The Lung Cancer Screening Navigator will take responsibility for the implementation, delivery and evaluation of a new service for participants invited to the SWAG lung cancer screening service. They will be part of the wider lung cancer service working closely with lung cancer screening clinicians, screening nurses, cancer support workers, diagnostic teams, Cancer Services, psychology and allied health care professionals.
Main duties of the job
This new role will support attendance at lung cancer screening and facilitate the smooth running of the patient journey by ensuring that coordinated and stream lined clinical and administrative processes revolve around the patient and their individual needs. The success of the pathway relies on close team working and a vital input and coordination of the patient pathway.
The post holder will organise and liaise with the clinical screening team to manage the planned checkpoints throughout a participant’s diagnostics and follow-up period, and support the screening team in ensuring the speciality is able to deliver safe and effective services.
The post-holder will also contribute to evaluation of the new role, supporting the clinical research team with delivery and data collection for the IMPALA trial. Relevant training will be provided on commencement in post.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Facilitating the smooth running of the participant journey by ensuring that co-ordinated and streamlined clinical and administrative processes revolve around the patient and their individual needs. To provide
information and support about screening processes, including benefits and risks, to enable people to navigate the health and social care system and make choices that are best for them A key aspect of the role involves daily and direct (e.g. face to face and telephone) communication with screening participants, relatives, carers, and other health and social care professionals. The information and nature of the communication required is sensitive due to the nature of cancer screening. Communication in this context requires a high degree of empathy, understanding, diplomacy, honesty and integrity.
Communications and Relationships
- Provide a point of contact for patients through their screening pathway.
- Maintain contact with the patients and their carers as appropriate during their screening pathway to assess on-going needs and enable a proactive prevention approach.
- Be responsible for organising appointments and providing relevant information prior to attendance at lung cancer screening.
- Develop excellent working relationships with departments which deliver lung cancer screening including the administrative and bookings teams, failsafe team, and clinical delivery team, in order to co-ordinate the patient’s screening journey.
- Develop strong links with fast track team and local primary care and community teams.
- Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with participants and with the multi- professional teams including lung cancer screening nurses and clinicians to ensure timely and appropriate scheduling.
- Work closely with the clinical research team, including the Clinical Trial Manager, Research Fellow and Chief Investigator to support delivery and collect data for the IMPALA trial. Support patients and carers to access appropriate information and support, including sign posting to a range of support services.
- Inform patients and carers who and how to make contact with when they feel that their condition or needs have changed, as appropriate including what to do out of hours.
- Have an awareness of the impact of ‘bad news’ when given a life threatening/life changing diagnosis for some patients which can be distressing.
- Help to provide patients with an excellent patient experience and take action to address any concerns including escalation of concerns. Document and monitor all aspects of care coordination and service delivery, supporting data collection for audit and research

- GCSE English Language and Mathematics (Grades A-C) or equivalent

- Experience of clinical cancer care and knowledge of diagnostic pathways and targets
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills, including familiarity with patient pathway management and clinical information systems
- Advanced IT skills, including database management, data curation and report writing

- Attention to detail, accurate data entry, meticulous file management
- Ability to communicate sensitively and kindly around difficult topics (i.e. cancer diagnoses, screening hesitancy)
- Ability to use own judgement to competently resolve problems and queries, including those of a sensitive and confidential nature
- Able to work independently and use own initiative to manage and prioritise workload.
- Ability to manage and interpret data correctly to inform decision-making, and to initiate change to working practices as required
Personal Qualities/Special Circumstances
Essential criteria
- Ability to travel to UK screening sites within the remit of the post (standard class public transport)
- Ability to attend in-person meetings at Southmead Hospital, minimum 1 day per week
- Ability to work flexible hours within the job remit, including occasional evenings and weekends if required
