Role: Mainframe Developer

Start Date: ASAP – 19/12/25

Contract Length: 3 Months

Work Location: Remote

IR35 Status: Outside IR35

Join a critical public sector transformation project focused on decommissioning legacy mainframe systems.

Urgently seeking an experienced Mainframe Developer with strong ICL VME & COBOL skills to support the migration of essential services (including payroll) off mainframe before an end-of-year deadline.

Key Responsibilities:

Reverse-engineer and interpret ICL VME mainframe applications written in COBOL
Support the migration of codebases into Windows DLL equivalents
Work with existing scripts to ensure functionality is retained and transitioned effectively
Provide technical expertise in legacy systems decommissioning
Collaborate with internal teams to troubleshoot and validate transitions in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment
Assist in GNU-based IBM tooling if experienced

Skills & Experience Required:

Strong hands-on experience with ICL VME mainframe systems
Strong expertise in COBOL, analysing and reworking legacy business logic
Understanding of mainframe-to-modern transitions

Desirable:

Experience with GNU on IBM environments
Public sector experience
