Job Description
Cornwall Council are seeking a motivated and practical individual to join our maritime team as a Maritime Assistant. This is a varied, public-facing role that requires working outdoors in all weather conditions. During the summer season, the successful candidate will predominantly act as point of contact for the Prince of Wales Pier, providing a visible and helpful presence for harbour users and visitors. In the winter months, the role will focus on assisting with mooring maintenance and general upkeep of harbour infrastructure.
You will mainly be based in Penryn and Falmouth but also undertaking maintenance duties within any of the Ports and Harbours of Truro, Penryn, Penzance, St Ives, Newquay, Bude, Portscatho, Portreath, as well as other maritime assets during the winter period.
Due to the seasonal nature of the role, the post holder will be required to participate in a rota providing seven-day operational cover during the summer season. This includes working alternate weekends from April through September. The role is based on a five-day working week, with flexibility required to meet service demands.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Harbour Master with day-to-day operational duties
- Assist with the running of Prince of Wales Pier during the summer season
- Assist with mooring inspections and maintenance during winter
- Carry out basic maintenance and manual tasks
- Provide a friendly and professional service to harbour users
- Monitor and report safety issues or hazards
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Is confident working outdoors in all weather
- Has a positive, public-facing approach
- Is flexible and willing to work weekends and public holidays
- Can work independently and as part of a small team
Desirable Experience And Skills
- Background in marine operations or vessel maintenance
- Practical skills in basic repairs and upkeep
- Knowledge of mooring systems and small boat handling
