The opportunity
We are looking for a Professional Support Lawyer (PSL) to join our established Data Protection team in London.
The successful candidate would ideally be an experienced Data Protection lawyer of at least Senior Associate level or equivalent with strong UK and European law experience across a wide spectrum of matters at an international firm.
The team
Our tier 1 ranked Data Protection team advises a wide range of corporate and other organisations around the world, reflecting the firm’s strengths in sectors such as Communications, Media, Ecommerce, Financial Services, Health and IT. Data protection sits as part of our internationally recognised commercial team which consists of c.100 lawyers in London and is our largest London team. The international commercial group also includes; Outsourcing; IT; Telecoms; Franchising licencing and multi-channel strategies; Competition and; Media, entertainment and sport.
What you'll do
- To keep and have responsibility for keeping the London data protection team on top of relevant legal changes (case law/statutory developments and future issues) including wider digital regulation of relevance to our clients
- To play an integral part in getting our precedents up to date and maintaining them to anticipate or respond to market or legal developments
- To organise know-how sharing (including collecting external and internal know how and making it accessible)
- To assist in the preparation of client seminars and client training sessions
- To manage and help in authoring client publications and bulletins
- To work and collaborate with our fee earners, plus marketing and business development support teams, on the legal aspects of our marketing materials/ initiatives and client updates in relation to existing and prospective UK and international clients
- Consideration and assistance in the development of technology solutions to improve efficiency and the fee earner experience
- To deal with queries from the team about current law and practice
- To research and analyse developments and identify key commercial issues for clients
- Assistance with transaction debriefing to extract relevant know-how
- To familiarise new trainees and associates with our know-how resources and precedents
- Providing trainees with a basic introduction to the types of work they will be exposed to during their employment seats
- Speak regularly with other PSL-style lawyers globally to ensure good practice and know-how is shared and activities are co-ordinated across departments and teams, where appropriate
About you
Essential
- Strong theoretical, practical and up to date knowledge of UK and European Data Protection law with suitable post qualification fee earning experience with a leading law firm or in house
- Experience in other overlapping areas of digital regulation (DMA, DSA, Data Act, AIA, NIS2), desirable but not essential
- Understanding of client demands in terms of technical knowledge and method of delivery
- Excellent legal drafting skills - ability to present technical legal issues and case developments in a clear, approachable and professional way.
- Client-orientated and international approach – ability to think laterally and to develop ideas in relation to business opportunities and training
- Use of initiative to apply experience to the benefit of the team and the wider firm
- Highly competent in Word, Excel and PPT
- Prior PSL experience not essential but good understanding of how a large (preferably international) law firms' knowledge functions operate is an advantage
- Applicants who wish to work part time will be considered
- Role to report primarily to Ruth Boardman and other partners in the London Data Protection team.
The main responsibilities of this role are outlined above; however, this description is not exhaustive, and the job holder may be required to undertake additional duties from time to time to ensure the smooth running of the department. The role may require some working outside our normal working hours of 9:30am- 5:30pm.
