Your new role
Reporting directly to our Head of Technical Services, here at Hitachi Rail we are looking for an experienced people manager to join our team as
Mechanical Engineering Manager. Within this role you will lead, coach and develop a team of 8 Engineers in all aspects of mechanical systems engineering, providing support to all in-service Hitachi fleet of trains.
As the
Mechanical Engineering Manager, it is critical you have a vast understanding and experience of both technical and operational mechanical components, ideally from a rail industry background. This expertise is key as the team also act as the UK Design Authority for the in-service fleets, managing the Technical Library and design information under contract. Other role responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- To undertake root cause analysis of assigned engineering issues.
- To progress understanding of issues, including to suggest mitigations and long-term corrective actions;
- To progress corrective actions to readiness for implementation on the fleets
- Form part of the UK based Design Authority for Mechanical systems and vehicle structures

About You…
Essential experience:
- Excellent knowledge of a selection of mechanical systems, both technically and operationally.
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, relevant standards, codes of practices and design principles / practices; particularly in UK Rolling Stock.
- Strong management, leadership and workload planning skills with the proven ability to deliver complex management tasks and achieve business goals and objectives.
- Proven experience of managing a team of engineers to deliver business orientated goals.
- Excellent knowledge of the Laws and Standards that apply and also proven experience in applying these standards to real world solutions / problems.
- Proven experience at delivering complex mechanical solutions in a Rolling Stock environment.
- Comfortable with ‘hands on’ engineering for on-train investigations when needed.
- Sound understanding of health and safety requirements in a practical working environment.
Essential Qualifications
- Engineering degree (i.e. BSc, BEng or MEng / MSc) in relevant engineering discipline (e.g. Mechanical, Aerospace etc.) or the ability to demonstrate extensive degree level working.
- Professional Registration with relevant Engineering Institution (e.g. CEng with IMechE) or working towards.
Desirable experience
- Experience in the Railway Industry.
- Knowledge of the UK Railway Operations and Engineering Safety Management System.
- Previous CAD and/or FEA experience (e.g., Ansys, PRoE, Solid works / edge);
- Direct knowledge or experience of implementing and developing engineering design and assurance plans.
- Common Safety Method Course, or similar.
