Role Introduction/ About The Role
The Mechanical Supervisor acts as a source of expertise in operation, maintenance and fault finding of complex mechanical installations and systems and will provide support for their team in their area of expertise. In addition, they will provide technical support to the electrical team on all mechanical matters and operational and technical leadership for the mechanical services delivered by the Maintenance Team.
The role-holder works, to ensure that mechanical building services are maintained to a high standard, comply with regulations, are safe and that emergencies are dealt with promptly. The role involves daily supervision and work allocation of in-house staff and contractors, identifying and arranging training where required. They will be required to specify and recommend the procurement of labour, services, equipment and replacement parts via the Stores.
This role will support the wider University to deliver the very best in class facilities which maximise uptime and minimise disruption to any teaching and research activities while delivering service in line with all current legislation, local guidance or requirements and/or industry best practice.
About You
To succeed in this role, you will need to be a highly experienced mechanical engineer with a strong background in the operation, maintenance, and fault diagnosis of complex mechanical systems within large, highly serviced buildings.
- You will have demonstrable experience supervising maintenance activities across multiple buildings, including managing in-house teams and external contractors.
- Your expertise will include mechanical maintenance, statutory compliance, and the ability to provide technical support to electrical colleagues on mechanical matters.
- You will be responsible for daily supervision and work allocation, ensuring that all mechanical services are delivered to a high standard, in compliance with regulations, and with minimal disruption to teaching and research activities.
- You will have a proven ability to specify and recommend procurement of labour, services, equipment, and replacement parts, working closely with Stores and procurement teams.
- Strong interpersonal, influencing, and leadership skills are essential, enabling you to lead your team effectively, communicate clearly, and prioritise workloads in a dynamic environment.
- You will also play a key role in identifying training needs and supporting the development of your team to maintain best-in-class service delivery.
Qualifications
It would be advantageous to hold relevant qualifications within the industry sector, such as:
- Membership of professional bodies (e.g. IWFM, IAM, IET)
- Qualifications in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Engineering Or substantial vocational experience that demonstrates your suitability for this supervisory role.
